They blame Bush for their incompetence. Typical if the elitist mentality in Hollywood and why they are quickly becoming irrelevant:
**President Bush Blamed for Failure of Erotic Film Industry
**By Gudrun Schultz
LOS ANGELES, United States, April 4, 2006 (LifeSiteNews.com) – Directors of erotic mainstream films are blaming the government of president George Bush for the current lack of interest in erotic thrillers, Reuters reported yesterday.
“Anything that is erotic has been banned in the United States,” said Dutch-born Paul Verhoeven, who directed the first “Basic Instinct” in 1992.

This is the most ludicrous charge I’ve ever heard against Bush (apart from the mind-boggling assertion that he is a moron and an evil genius at the same time).

I’m sorry, I must have missed the story where men-in-black with sunglasses walked into the set of Brokeback Mountain and confiscated films and scripts.

Verhoven should do less talking and make more cool Sci Fi flicks

Actually, I think it’s funny they give Bush that much sway over the minds of the American people on one hand, and then on the other they act as though Americans have deserted Bush’s Whitehouse. Me thinks they speak with forked tongue.

I also find this encouraging, as it seems that the American people in general are getting fed up with smut and propoganda and moving on to other things! There will always be a market for this stuff, but evidently, the tide is turning. 👍

That’s the real disappointment for me. Granted his flicks like Robocop and Starship Troopers were ultra-violent, I thought his semi-apocalyptic view of near-future Chicago was brilliant.

Although I am very much anti-Bush I must say that is a ridiculous article.

Please continue to pray for the end of pornography and violent entertainment.

“Look at the people at the top (of the government). We are living under a government that is constantly hammering out Christian values. And Christianity and sex have never been good friends.”
This is a perfect reflection of the secular world regarding sex. Truth is, nothing in the world holds sex in higher regard than the Catholic Church or has greater respect for the conjugal act. It is the secular world that is the true enemy of sex by cheapening it to the level it has.

God gave us all His gifts to use for ourselves; the sun, the air, the waters, all plants and animals. The only thing He asks us not to use is each other for our own selfish desires.

I need to go look up The Catholic Imagination because he quotes a study suggesting Catholics are more satisfied with their sex lives than their non-Catholic counterparts.

Perhaps this is because Catholics understand that sex is more than “getting off” or “making babies” and that the marital act is an earthly reflection of Christ’s relationship with His bride, the Church. What could give a deeper satisfaction than that?

Yes they sadly always blame Bush for anything… (most of the time as you said for their incompetence and sometimes just for something else) (sigh) oh well…

You know, just because you say it again and again doesn’t make it true.

Have they ever thought that people don’t care to see those movies anymore? I mean they force fed us those type of movies all through the 90s. It got boring. Same thing with the Horror and Gore flicks of the late 80s and 90s. Back in the day, there were tons of horror flicks being pumped out as well. Same story. 5 naked girls, haunted house, running and tripping…dead. 1 girl stays alive and saves the day. Only to be stalked by the killer in the sequel.  Or the action films that were pumped out one right after the other. One guy takes on armies of men. Not one scratch on him, never reloads his weapon and manages to keep his hair styled (Segal)

I did not know he was to blame for this, too, but if he is, great, another good reason to vote for him, too bad he is not running again, maybe he will come back to Texas.

Tsk. Tsk. The real reason they’re failing is obvious–we want more substance.

If they’re failing, I think the end of the article has the real answer:
but others suggest there is a lack of interest in sex themes for mainstream movies because Internet porn is so easily available, and television has become more sexually explicit.

I think that the American public has become desensitized to shock entertainment in general. Why spend money to go see an erotic film if it’s available on the internet for free? Basic Instinct 2 failed because of this, and because it was a horrible film. Hollywood needs to start coming up with original stories that people enjoy instead of just doing remakes and liberal films.

I find it amusing that Hollywood liberals will blame Bush for their failures. I don’t see how anyone in their right mind can seriously blame Bush because erotic films don’t do well. It was never a great genre of film anyway, even during the 1990s at it’s height.

Erotic films are poison to the soul! If President Bush is to blame for the decline of this junk, then I would commend him for that.

OK, first off, if that guy made Basic Instinct he should be sentenced to Death by a Thousand Cuts. But didn’t Eszterhas have something to do with it? I think it may have been miscredited.

Second, he’s dog-ignorant; the US spends more on porn than on any other kind of entertainment including gambling (and you felt superior to the Japanese on porn, didn’t you?).

Third, movies that hinge around sex tend to be extraordinarily shallow, preachy, and formulaic. Striptease, for instance, has no more depth than “Charlie’s Angels,” and I mean the TV show.

Fourth, things’re going to keep going badly until they realize that sexiness is a subtle, organic quality, not something that’s defined by cup sizes or amount of skin shown. To me, for instance, a woman in one of those 6-layer 19th century kimono or a medieval gown is far sexier than a bikini model.
