Third, movies that hinge around sex tend to be extraordinarily shallow, preachy, and formulaic. Striptease, for instance, has no more depth than “Charlie’s Angels,” and I mean the TV show.
If your only examples are Hollywood productions, those are the results you’re going to get. That’s a little bit like using the little chocolates they leave on hotel pillows to prove that all chocolate is mass-produced nastiness.

I’ve said it before; the key to a good movie about anything is that it is not about it, but rather of it. The key to a good movie about sex is that it is not about sex itself, but is about the implications of and reactions to our culture’s sexual practices, and the ways people act and think about that.

Striptease is a trashy skin flick; saying that is a movie about sex is the equivalent of saying the chase scene in The French Connection is about train engines.

OH?
And what good has the non-Hollywood film industry, outside Japan, done lately?
Consider the independent films here at home. Sure, Tarantino, but most of the others are independent for the same reason most starving artists starve: they’re not *good *enough!

Or how about Canada? I’ve never seen a good Canadian film; good Canadian filmmakers go to Hollywood.

European movies, give or take spaghetti westerns, some French crime films and adaptations of their classic drama, and a few British things, are simple pain-inducing samplers of what’s wrong with that continent. Eastern Europe’s worse; Romanian movies are like being the cop in Reservoir Dogs, only with worse music.
Asian movies, other than the Japanese, are pretty bad, too; when they’re not laughable, braindead, b-list action flicks, they’re boring. I except the Korean masterpiece Chingu, but that’s saved by being a Japanese-style gangster flick.

Africa doesn’t have much of a film industry, unless you count South Africa, which makes the same kind of movies as Australia: English ones, in other words. And Central American/Mexican movies are a lot like European movies, but more cheaply made. South American movies are even cheaper than that, even the Argentinean ones, but actually manage to be even worse than that would indicate.

A better way to put it would be, “Striptease is something of a straw-man example,” which it was. But it’s in the same genre as Basic Instinct, along with Wild Things and the Joe Eszterhas *ouvre *entire.

It’s good to see Bush blamed for something good.

I don’t like the President but found myself defending him online last week. A magazine I subscribe to has a forum with a section for ‘errors in the magazine’. The magazine said that Bush was against stem cell research. That’s wrong of course so I quickly posted on the forum to say so. He is against embryonic stem cell research but not other stem cell research so I explained the differences and defended the President. I don’t know if my family will ever forgive me for this defence. 🙂

When he funds the search for other effective forms, I willc are. Until then, it’s exactly like his stance on gay marriage; take an issue that’s going to be in the same place for years if not decades yet, where the most actual movement will be a step forward and a step back, and use it to mobilize your voting base. He can “take a strong stance” on stem cell research all he wants; the fact remains it’s all talk until he does something to move the effort in a positive direction.

Sorry, should have posted a rant alert.😃

They blame Bush for their incompetence. Typical if the elitist mentality in Hollywood and why they are quickly becoming irrelevant: PF

If Dubya has been responsible for the collapse of the porn flick industry, more power to him 🙂

Personally I think they should thank President Clinton for that. I can’t remember before him there being talk about sexual addictions. Erotic films/pictures are a major component of a sex-addict’s habit.

Much as I should like to agree with Verhoeven on this, I think the real answer is found toward the end of the article. I remember reading a story about this topic (I think, in the National Catholic Register). The reporter interviewed a college-aged ticket salesman at a cinema, asking why movies like Closer fared poorly at the box office. The response: “People simply can’t be bothered to pay for something like this, when they have hardcore porn available at home for free.”
