Presidential iPod Playlist Revealed

April 12, 2005 6:06PM

In addition to Van Morrison, the president likes to hum along to old country favorites like George Jones, Alan Jackson and Kenny Chesney when he’s pounding the tarmac between meetings with other world leaders.

Van Morrison’s “Brown Eyed Girl” has been revealed as one of the songs that keeps U.S. President George Bush going when he’s working out.

The latest accolade for the worldwide hit came to light when a presidential aide was asked what the world’s most powerful man listens to on his iPod.

Bush has owned the latest must-have device for music fans since last July, when he received it from his twin daughters as a birthday gift.

In addition to Van Morrison, the president likes to hum along to old country favorites like George Jones, Alan Jackson and Kenny Chesney when he’s pounding the tarmac between meetings with other world leaders. Also included on his playlist are “Circle Back” by John Hiatt, “(You’re So Square) Baby, I Don’t Care” by Joni Mitchell and 1979 hit “My Sharona” by The Knack.

However, Bush doesn’t have the time to download the music himself – that task falls to his personal aide Blake Gottesman.

Joe Levy, deputy managing editor at Rolling Stone magazine, described the presidential playlist as “boomer rock ‘n’ roll”.

“It’s safe, it’s reliable, it’s loving. It’s feel-good music. The Sex Pistols it’s not,” he said.

Another presidential aide, Mark McKinnon, said the selection represented nothing more than an accompaniment to exercise. “No-one should psychoanalyze the song selection,” he said. “It’s music to get over the next hill.”
