I come from a relatively small state, I like the electoral college 😃
I grew up in an electorally small state (KS) and live in a large one now (NY), but even after having having been on both sides, I really don’t see the point of the electoral college. 'Course, I’ve never lived in the South, so maybe I just don’t get the whole state’s rights thing…?

Well before this gets too far OT, I’ll just leave a discussion on the electoral college, and the balance between the states, to another thread at another time.

I learned a looooong time ago – in Junior High, to be specific – that doing the right thing does not make a person poplular. In fact, it ususally makes a person very unpopular.

Scripture confirms this:
“If the world hates you, realize that it hated me first. If you belonged to the world, the world would love its own; but because you do not belong to the world, and I have chosen you out of the world, the world hates you.” John 15:18-19
I believe it was Pope John Paul II who said, “the opinion of the majority is not necessarily the Truth”

The net of this is that an opinion poll does not automatically constitute Truth.

Heres the Presidents approval rating history per Rasmussen reports-the only polling company that tracks it daily Basically his apporval rating it is about where it was when the only poll that matters was taken last November. When you see the polls puting Bush in the low 40s check the internals-you will inevitably find that the poll oversampled Democrats.

Monday August 29, 2005–Forty-nine percent (49%) of American adults now approve of the way George W. Bush is performing his role as President.

Dates are release dates. Surveys conducted on preceding three nights.

During 2004, reports on the President Job Approval were based upon surveys of Likely Voters. Typically, a survey of Likely Voters would report a Job Approval rating 2-3 points higher than a survey of all adults.

On Election Day, the President’s Job Approval was at 52%. During all of 2004, the President’s Job Approval ranged from a high of 57% in early January to a low of 48% on May 17.

**The President’s highest rating of 2005 was 54% on February 4.

Just for the sake of argument, Philip. How are you going to enforce such a notion? At what point does the polling shift in opinion = a forced change of policy. Who’s doing the polling? How do you know the polling data over any given period of time on any given issue is accurate?
With Bill Clinton his policies shifted daily per what the polls showed. One thing even his criticis admit is George Bush is not infulenced at all by polls. He does what he beleives is the right thing to do for the Country-period.

To say the electoral college stymied the will of the people is another invalid statement. The electoral college is yet another example of why our system of government isn’t a pure democracy but is a representitive republic. The electoral college worked as the founding fathers of the nation designed it to. It prevents a few states from dominating the smaller states. Leave it alone!
Agreed-if not for the electoral college the country would be ruled based on the opinion of the residents of the nations large cities.

Here’s one example…

One definition of a lie is to “give a false impression.” Some people claim that a lie is a word for word falsehood, but that’s incorrect. The “lie” was deliberately giving the false impression that Iraq was involved in the 9/11 terrorist attacks. I say deliberately because when you repeatedly suggest that we invade Iraq because of 9/11, and you have no evidence, you are deliberately trying to mislead (a polite way of saying you are telling a lie.)

Polls showed at the time that a large segment of the population (around 42%) believed not just that Iraq was involved, but that the majority of the hijackers were Iraqi. That doesn’t just happen by accident.
Not once did anyone in the Bush Adminsitration cliam Saddam Hussein or Iraq was involved in 9-11. The false impression being given is the same one you give here-that the President made such a claim. in fact on numerous occassions he made it clear he beleived there was no direct connection.
