Hey all. Got a call from a detective a couple days ago. My phone was stolen out of my car. The guys who did it are apparently on quite the theft spree. I’m debating on whether or not to press charges. From what I understand they have done this quite a bit, and they stole an officers’ badge, rammed a car, or something or other. Bottom line is they are neck deep. Is adding one more charge going to help them reform? I’m leaning towards pressing charges but my concern is that adding one more won’t help them any because they are going to have enough trouble as it is. Then again maybe a bit of tough love helps them figure it out. The prison system however isn’t exactly geared towards reform… Thoughts and if you could a few prayers for these gents. Thanks.

Press charges and pray for them.

If you do not press charges, they will just continue to offend until someone presses charges or until they do something bad enough that they get arrested without anyone needing to press charges.

Press charges. What I’d like to say here, I can’t. You can still forgive, but press charges as well.

Not To Doubt your story but how could you get a call if your phone was stolen? Also what does from what I understand mean how do you know this information about them? This doesn’t make sense at all but if it is true I would not press charges if nothing else was stolen and you have your phone back.

My car was stolen from my carport when we were at home. Those thieves had been on a spree as well, I wish someone had pressed charges on them when it was only a phone.

Is this against the rule of seeking medical/professional advice? Is legal advice included in that?

Yeah the detective pulled the SIM card from my phone and called my house number. The detective is who told me the story. I heard it second hand so I wasn’t there, ie “from what I understand”. Additionally this particular police department I’ve noticed can be a little…zealous.

Not actually seeking legal advice, seeking advice from a faith point of view, so I think we’re good.

Sounds like you are having doubts. If your phone is back and nothing else was stolen I would not press charges

umm… I thought pressing charges was so that restitution could be made to the victim.

I really think it is SILLY to care about what will happen to the thiefs after you press charges.

Do it.

If they already stole an officer’s badge, then that means they could attempt to impersonate an officer - then all of us in trouble.

I can forgive a civilian, but when the offender is someone in authority (or someone pretending to be one), then lack of trust starts to develop and society turns to chaos.

Not doubts, more just trying to think of what us most long term effective for them. Truthfully from my perspective I got my phone back so…meh who cares. But that isn’t the point. Letting people do what they want with no consequence doesn’t always work. Coming down like thunder doesn’t always work either… Many brains are often better than one…

Sure, press charges.

They also stole an officer’s badge, so you’d be doing the local constabulary a solid.

He’s going to get what he’s going to get anyhow in time, the extra charge will just make the case a little clearer and you are also helping out the DA raise his “batting average” by adding more easy charges.

The criminal is already busted, he probably does care as he’ll serve the time concurrently.

The accused will probably just cop to it, and you’ll probably never have to testify.

you could press charges and someone comes down like thunder on them OR you could press charges and someone deals with them appropriately.

Someone could deal with them inappropriately and they still will reform. All though the legal system may not be the best, it is the system who handles it and you can not single handely change that (nor could people posting here change that).

Not to mention after you press charges, you probably will never hear what happened. I guess my main concern is you are trying to play God by created the outcome YOU want. Instead of respecting your limitations

you probably will never hear what happened.
As a victim, I think if you give the DA’s office a call when its through, they’ll let you know.

They have to, from my understanding, here in Pennsylvania.

When I was robbed in 1994, they kept me abreast of it

Is adding one more charge going to help them reform?
Filing a report/pressing charges doesn’t necessarily have anything to do with whether the criminal reforms. You may have to have the police report in order to recoup any fraudulent charges they made using your information, or to limit your damages for something they did with your information/device.

This is really more of a legal matter than a faith issue.
