If I, having concluded that a sin was most likely venial rather than mortal, decided that I will receive Communion, and then thought “I’ll mention it at my next Confession just in case it was mortal”, even though I do not think it really is mortal, is this a sin?
 
no, if you did not think it was mortal then it is not a sin to receive, and more than that, if you did not know a sin was mortal at the time you committed it, but then found out later it was mortal, for you it was still only venial, and you can still receive communion,
it’s just important to avoid all sin period, mortal or venial, and to educate yourself on what is mortally and venially sinful, because to neglect learning your sins is also a sin in itself.

just keep in mind, that God is not so much offended with us when we fall from weakness as He is when we fall on purpose, and that goes for both mortal and venial sins, so once you discover something to be sinful, you should strive(by the grace of God) never to willingly commit any sin.

although in confession we should confess our venial sins to, and even if we do not have any mortal sins, it is profitable to your soul to confess both venial sins and also temptations to sin, because by confessing your venial sins while you are in the state of grace, you receive extraordinary graces which you can only get in confession that will help you to better overcome your sins, and to confess your temptations is also very profitable for you because by doing that you really knock the wind out of the temptaions sails.

We usually know when a sin is mortal or venial if we have a well formed conscience. However, we also have a tendency to lie convincingly to ourselves. I think it is humility to say to Jesus, “I really want to receive you but I’m not sure if that sin was mortal. Out of respect for You I am not going to receive You today and I am going to confess the sin as soon as possible”. Then make a spiritual communion. If you are in the state of grace, Jesus will surely come to you.

When it was common for priests to hear confessions before Mass this didn’t used to be a problem. I wish we could go back to that.

The problem with that, though, is that scrupulous persons would rarely communion, then.

That’s true but I was not knowingly addressing a scrupulous person and I don’t screen what I write here in case someone with scrupulosity might be reading it. People who suffer from scrupulosity should get their advice from a single confessor, not on this forum.

that’s what they do at the FSSP parishes, there’s always long lines at our church before mass on Sundays though, so you don’t always get in before mass even then d:
