Pretty cool CFR video

May I ask you some simple questions, Senor Salsa? Why did you place this on the Traditional Catholicism forum? What was your intent? Is this traditional Catholicism? Most of us are familiar with Fr. Stan Fortuna and would not consider him a “traditional Catholic”. I await your answer.

i put it here mostly becuase i didnt know where else it belonged. I thought maybe on the vocations board, but it doesnt get as much traffic as this board. The water cooler is generally topics that relate in not much of a way to Catholicism. It isnt a news story. etc. So i figured this is as close as there is to a general “things of Catholic interest” board. I mean look at the other topics on here. WYD, questions about a muslim poster, what makes a strong parish. Most of the topics, but not necesarily “Traditional Catholic” in the vein of the TLM and Council of Trent.🤷

However, if a moderator or someone sees fit, i dont object to it being moved. it is definately not a “bait and bash” like many seem to be claiming at every chance.

Thank you. The most appropriate place for this IMHO would have been the Back Fence. And you are quite correct about all the other threads which have been started on the TC forum which are not exactly traditional Catholicism. But there really does seem to me, IMHO, any number of posters who deliberately post threads and comments on this forum designed to get a “knee jerk” reaction from traditional Catholics. I tried to be very diplomatic in my questions to you but from my point of view, the sight of habited monks with electric guitars et al is hardly traditional Catholicism.

Fr. Benedict Groeschel on EWTN is a “traditional Catholic”. Fr. Stan Fortuna is not. Both belong to the same order, do they not? I was not making any kind of qualitative judgment as you seem to imply. It was an empirical judgment in that the link to the video you provided was not, by definition, traditional Catholicism.

I’m not sure if I’d say Fr. Stan is not a traditional Catholic. I mean, he may not be, but I mean that I’m not sure that just because he is a friar (not a monk) who plays an electric bass/guitar he is not a traditional Catholic.

The fact is, I really dislike his music. Ick, ack, cough, gahhhh. Like, I really do. He performed at the youth and seminarian rally Pope Benedict held in Yonkers, at which I was present, and it really was 15 minutes I’d rather have back lol.

That being said, “way” back in the 50s and before, and even going back through the centuries, there have always been Catholic priests and friars (especially Franciscan) and folks like that who performed music, even as a hobby, that would have been contemporary at the time. It was never a mainstream, very common thing, but it certainly happened.

So idk. I can’t really say for sure, but I don’t know if it’s really absolutely true that he is not traditional just because he plays some contemporary music.

Peace and God bless

Fr. Stan plays rap music. Can you honestly say that he is traditional and that his music is traditional? More importantly would you want to go to a Mass and hear a rap Gloria? By their fruits you will know them. Can you say that 100 years from now Fr. Stan’s compositions will be sung will the same celerity as Vivaldi - who was a priest too?

One hundred years from now Mozart’s “Ave Verum Corpus” will still be sung. I’m sorry, I just don’t place Fr. Stan and the brothers on the CFR video on the same plane as Mozart or Bruckner. Not to mention Faure and Durufle or any of the English composers of the mid 20th century or Rutter of the late 20th century.

Fr. Stan and the brothers on the CFR video may be most traditional in their beliefs. Their music is anything but.

I didn’t notice it in the video, but could you point out where the Friars used rap within the Mass? I noticed they chanted a prayer at the Mass shown.

They appeared to use a slight music interlude during Adoration, but it did not even appear to be rap, just simple p&w.

Sorry if that is not what you meant, but most, if not all of the composers listed did compose music that was used within the Mass at one point in time, so that is what it seems.

Lol… brotherrolf, I am not suggesting that Fr. Stan’s music ought to be used in Mass, and I’m quite certain that he would never dream of suggesting that either, though I could be wrong.

I really have a problem with calling music traditional or untraditional. Certainly, there is music that is traditional in terms of Liturgical worship, but when we’re talking about music in general, that’s another matter altogether.

Are you suggesting that one’s musical preference is a factor in whether or not one is a traditional Catholic or not?

I apologize in advance if my post sounds confrontational. I always worry about this when I ask people questions… I don’t intend it to be that way.

Peace and God bless!

Mozart wrote music for some relatively racy operas. Hope he didn’t drag any of “that” music into his Masses.

at least watch the video before you bash it. It clearly states and shows the difference between the Sacred music they use at Mass and at the Adoration vs the Rap/Jazz/Whatever else they play afterwards at the “afterparty” as the video calls it, that part is more of a social time, to interact with other Catholics, the video calls it a night club with out the drinking. as many as 700 Catholics just having safe, moral fun together. I will again bring up Fr. Stan’s song “Unborn Victims of Violence”. Despite being a rap song, there is nothing morally wrong with the message, which in the end is whats important for music that isnt used in a Mass. Just becuase most rap is degrading doesnt mean that all is
