I’m aware the Church believes that contraception is grave sin.

My question is, suppose there was a drug that ONLY prevented ovulation and/or sperm and eggs from meeting. Would that be the same as abortion?

No, that would be contraception.

Contraception is something that artificially prevents fertilisation. Abortion (Catholic understanding) is something that artificially prevents a fertilized egg from progressing to its natural end in childbirth.

Isn’t that what birth control pills do? Prevent ovulation? And isn’t that what condoms do? Physically prevent the sperm from getting inside the woman and meeting the egg?

The Pill is supposed to prevent ovulation; however, the “back-up” is that if ovulation occurs and a baby conceived, then the Pill does something to the uterus so that the baby cannot implant and thus is miscarried.

They avoided actually calling it abortifacient by saying that pregnancy did not occur until implantation…

Apparently they have adjusted the hormone levels so that the changes to the uterus no longer occur, and it is true that AGI shows that some women who come in for abortions say they have used the Pill correctly during the month they conceived a baby.

I personally do not know how to look into the claims that the adjustment has had this effect, so I can’t say anything definite about it one way or the other.

The Church has always taught that preventing pregnancy while engaging in marital activity is wrong–*and all the other Christian ecclesial communities did too, *until the Anglican Lambeth Convention of 1930, when the Anglicans decided it would be all right.

And the Church has always taught that abortion is wrong.

And that artificial contraception and abortion are different and not the same.

However, some forms of artificial birth control are abortifacient like the IUD, and others have that as a “back-up” (see above).

Preventing ovulation?!? No wonder homosexuals think they can have gay marriage. Just swapping sterility. Is this a good place to give my thanks to God that some anonymous chicken in my wee flock of four “ovulated” her first egg yesterday in the middle of the drought and on one of the hottest days at that? My other chicken connection says no eggs at their roost during this heat so THANKS, GOD!

Yikes. Preventing ovulation?!? Would sterile ladies’ ovulation prevention hormones get in the drinking water just like The Pill hormones do and stop my chickens from laying eggs?!? Would the hormone contaminated water also stop male sexual response?!?Preventing ovulation?!? Just exercise incessantly and go on a no-fat diet. No cholesterol, no hormones. But also no sex drive.

So why not just cobble up a robo-partner or a trans-gender human and quit messing with these “gennies,” you know, genetic females?🙂 The flip side of this “love for women” is egg harvesting that blows human women’s ovaries up, sometimes inducing deadly rupture as ovulation en masse is induced. They solicit victims at college campuses and the pay is high except for the dying part.

Your question on preventing ovulation is how many in Judaism have found a "loophole around contraception. It is silly in a way, If fertility is only the mans responsibility, then why did the Bible address the topic anyways? This is looking at the letter of the law and not the spirit of it. If a person is looking for loopholes then why bother going thru the motions of doing the deed properly at all?
