Is it permissible for the priest to say “May the Peace of the Lord, Shalom, Be with you All?”

I’l like to know if this is a permissible addition or if it falls into the category of the priest not allowed to change any text of the liturgy.

Thanks,
Gigi

Normally a priest is not supposed to add words to the liturgy. However, Shalom means Peace of the Lord. So in a sense, he was just repeating himself. Is there a reason (geographical, cultural, etc) that he would feel the need to say this in a different language?

Are you sure, my pastor says his own thing sometimes. It sounds goods but I can never find it in my missal.

We had a Pastor several years ago (who has since retired) that use to ad lib the entire Mass. The one that I still remember (because he used it pretty regularily, is)… “God so loved the world that in the fullness of time He sent His only begotten Son to suffer and die for our sins. Think about what that means the next time you’re clipping your toenails.”

Toenails? The Sacrifice of the Mass? TOENAILS? :banghead:

He had a lot of these little comments that he use to throw in all over the place during the Mass. Unfortunately, this was in the early 1990’s (I believe that he retired ar 75 in 1994 or 1995) and I no longer recall most of them.

Before anyone thinks of him too negatively, I need to say that he was extremely well liked by the parish community. It took a little bit to get use to him but during his final / going away Mass, there wasn’t a dry eye in the place and his shoes were extremely difficult to fill afterwards.

… But he did have this “thing”, where he would add / substitute his own words all of the time.

that’s why he did do-it-yourself Masses, he was more interested in being well-liked as Fr Bob or Fr Joe than standing in alter Christus. I did once know a priest in the 70s who added Shalom to the Peace be with you, when saying Mass in his hometown when some of his Jewish relatives were in attendance.

If it weren’t so sad it would be funny.
It is funny and I’m sure he meant well but like you say wrong and not condusive to reverence
