Is there anything that says that a priest can’t be a Godfather? We have someone in mind, but want to have a “backup plan” in case it’s not allowed.
Thanks…I thought so too, but my husband seemed to find the idea a little weird.Yes, a priest can be a Godparent/Sponsor.
Not to my knowledge, but the minister conferring baptism should not himself be the sponsor, as this confuses the proper roles of each.Is there anything that says that a priest can’t be a Godfather? We have someone in mind, but want to have a “backup plan” in case it’s not allowed.![]()

Just not used to the idea of a priest in that kind of a role, I guess. I had wondered, myself, if there wouldn’t be some sort of crossing of “professional boundaries” in asking. Why does he find the idea weird?
I would presume you have some sort of relationship with this priest-- for example, close family friend or relative.
One of my friends has an uncle who is a priest, and he is her Godfather.
Ouch… I hope I will now see this daygo by quickly.Upon seeing the title of this thread, did anyone else have the image of a priest saying “Leave the censor. Take the cannoli”?

Quite acceptable. I was present at a baptism where the priest was the Godfather. It was awesome. After the ceremony, the young priest took the child and went to the Blessed Mother’s altar. He raised the baby high in the air, lowered his own head, prayed silently, and the recited the Hail Mary in Latin. Without hesitation, all joined in the Latin as the baby was dedicated to the Blessed Mother.
Then the priest took the infant to the high altar, knelt before the tabernacle, and again raised the infant high over his head in both hands. He remained in silent prayer for some time, and yes, we were all praying he would not drop his Godchild.
Then he returned the baby to the parents, and there was not a dry eye in the Church.
Beautiful!!!
By far the most wonderful baptism I have attended.

Last night, I watched the Easter Vigil Mass from St. Peter’s Basilica. Pope Benedict baptized several people… and one man had a priest behind him, as god-father. What a blessing! Baptized by the Vicar of Christ… AND a priest for a god-father!Is there anything that says that a priest can’t be a Godfather?
