Our priest told me 2 weeks ago, when I remembered he had a birthday in the same month as my husband, he told me he was
a"scorpio" I told him, Father, I don’t believe in that" and I said
bye to him, and walked out of the church shaking my head.
I thought it was very disconcerting to hear him state that! I
wonder if I should talk to him about it? It makes me seriosuly
wonder if he believes in astrology? Why would he state that?
He did not say it in a laughing manner, nor did he seem to be
joking about it. There was nothing light hearted about his statement.
It was matter of fact. I did not misinterpret what he said. I heard
it with my own ears. I was kind of disappointed to hear him say
such a thing. 😦

If it’s really, really bothering you, you might ask him. But, these days, it’s so common for people to know their astrological sign; knowing that doesn’t mean that people believe in astrology.

That may be, but it is totally inappropriate for a priest to be concerned with astrological signs!

These “signs” are so stupid!

Thank you for your response. I was surprised, as well as disappointed that father would even say it. It is indeed bothering
me, and I will politely discuss it with him. Thank you for your
response.

I agree–it would be stupid to put any faith in astrology. It probably wasn’t the best thing Marilena’s priest could have said, but it’s not sinful or wrong for him to know his astrological sign.

If someone asks him what his sign is, it would be better for your priest to reply,“The Sign of the Cross.”

That is awesome, I am gonna use that from now on when someone asks me what my sign is!!

And yet God has been known to use the stars to direct people to Christ:
After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the time of King Herod, Magi from the east came to Jerusalem and asked, “Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews? **We saw his star in the east ** and have come to worship him.”
Matthew 2:1-2
That might be the last time, though.

Beat me to it.

I do recall reading that there is nothing wrong or sinful about astrology. As Joe Gloor pointed out, astrology was used by the Magi to find Christ. It isn’t astrology that would be sinful, it’s the predictions for the future that is.

Actually the use of astrology is a sinful act. The Magi of course were directed by the star. However, they were of the religion of Zoroaster and they were looking for his return as he predicted. However, upon coming face to face with the Christ they gave him the gifts of gold frankincense and myrrh. What people don’t realize is that gold rods, frankincense and myrrh were the instruments of their trade. They laid down their practice in the face of Christ. Further, today it is highly related to the New Age Movement and it can dispose a person to error in the least and possession in the worst. I once received a rectors conference on thsi very topic and the priest giving the talk had dedicated his vocation to the research and fight against the New Age and it was his position that the use of astrological symbology was opening ones self up to something that is not of God.

Well, I am about to go find myself another parish. I live far away from the approved Latin Mass where I like to attend. So, there is another
church not to far from where we live. I have this feeling that if I talk to our priest about my feelings, he might not like it no matter how nice Iam about it. Iam just going to let it go, and find another parish. 🙂

Marilena,

Not to sound harsh, but from your last post, it sounds like you’re throwing the baby out with the bath water.

You are not giving the priest a chance to explain himself. As another poster said, it’s not unusual for people to know their ‘sign’. I know my sign, but haven’t looked at a horoscope in many many years. You are ASSUMING the worst because of his statement. There is an old saying- "Never assume, because when you do, you make an *** out of u and me.

If after speaking to him you still feel uncomfortable then I would suggest leaving for your peace of mind.

Just my :twocents: .

Err yeah… I can do without the quoted swear word thanks. Iam not assuming anything. I will think about talking to him. Iam not going to “throw in the towel” yet. Iam only thinking about leaving. We’ll see.I want to go,and I don’t. Also onenote, I have been attending the Latin Mass despite the fact it is far away. ( 2 hours travel time by transit ) I really love it, and plan on sticking with it.

Marilena,

I’m sorry if you took offense at the supposed swear word. The point I was trying to make is that when we ‘assume’ something we aren’t always right; and then we make an A S S out of U and ME.

You stated in your o.p. that “There was nothing light hearted about his statement. It was matter of fact.” Well, I’m a Virgo. That is a STATEMENT. That is a FACT. Plain and simple. I’m not typing it in a light-hearted fashion. It does not mean I believe/follow astrology. As a matter of fact, there is a difference between astrology and astronomy. I don’t believe in astrology, nor do I read my horoscope. But according to whomever designated what constellations are called by what name, and where they happen to appear in the sky at the same time every year (astronomy), my birth date happens to fall whenever the constellation “Virgo” is in the sky on September 6th. Hence my astrological sign is Virgo.

I’m sorry, but I believe you are reading TOO much into his statement.

Agreed when I read your post and saw how you were going to leave your church over it. I thought man I wish the troubles in my church were so small.
People automatically tell you your astrological sign. Now me yes I am a Gemini but does that mean I follow it no. But people will tell me that as soon as I tell them my birthdate.
There are so many big fish to fry in the Church today that, for me personally I would not have even blinked an eye about it.

Thank you, I didn’t know that the “tools of the trade” for astrologers were gold rods, frankincense, and myrrh… I also didn’t know that they were laying down that practice by cause of Christ. I did know that it was related to the New Age movement today.

My assertion was, after further study, false. I checked New Advent for astrology and came across this:
From the start the Christian Church strongly opposed the false teachings of astrology. The Fathers energeticaly demanded the expulsion of the Chaldeans who did so much harm to the State and the citizens by employing a fantastic mysticism to play upon the ineradicable impulses of the common people, keeping their heathen conceptions alive and fostering a soul-perplexing cult which, with its fatalistic tendencies created difficulties in the discernment of right and wrong and weakened the moral foundations of all human conduct.
I must have confused astrology with astronomy. That’s my mistake, thanks for correcting me.

Your welcome. It is a common problem today. Really, today the real problem is that we don’t believe that any of that kind of stuff is real. But we have to remember that the forces of evil do exist. There is a restriction against magic, tarot, necromancy, astrology, and other occult related things for a reason. Even though modernity does not believe in the reality of any of these things the Church does because Her experience tells Her that they are a danger to the faithful.

To answer this post, so there is no more confusion, and so it doesn’t potentially get heated, I will be speaking to my priest. NO I will
NOT be rude to him. That is NOT my style. I also will not leave
my parish. His comment left me disappointed, and somewhat surprised. I will speak to him about it. Therefore, there is no
further need for me to discuss this situation. Thank you all for
your posts.

I couldnt agree more! I’m so tired of hearing people read those silly things.
