last sunday a friar (our chaplain), after the mas in a poor clare monastery, he spoked about the music in the liturgy. He said that the choir must see to it that what they sing must be in conformity with the liturgy. He was after the song sanctus in which the choir sung it in different translation which goes this way. “holy lord is your name, in the heavens above, blessed be the lord’s name, sing his glory forever…”… he said that it was very far from the latin translation.

After the mass, the head of the choir confront the friar in the sacristy and he was very angry that he said that they are professionals and the friar shouldnt have said it in front of the people. The choir also said that they were singing that song fopr years now and no one dared to correct them. The choir leader said that because the friar had attacked him in the pulpit so he will also attacked him in radio.

the day after that person which is also a radion announcer attacked the friar in the radio. His last word was that if he will ever see that friar again he will not call him “father” but rather he will just call him mister…

It is very sad that the choir that was corrected by the friar was a religious organization or a church organization.

Honestly this sounds like it was a mistake on both people’s parts. The friar should have taken it up first in private with the choir director. Of course if the choir director refused to change something they have been doing for years or the friar was just explaining a change that was happening then he was in the right.

The person that took revenge and went on the radio show was definitly in the wrong. Revenge does not fit within Catholic teaching.

The friar needs a quick lesson in interpersonal skills. There is no excuse for criticizing the choir in public. He should have had a private discussion with the choir director. His original offense led to retaliation. Both sides were wrong.

I’m scratching my head a bit about the whole situation. Why would a group of Poor Clares have a professional choir singing? Normally the nuns would be singing themselves.

While perhaps the friar ought to have approached it in private, he also has the obligation of instructing the faithful, so as to prevent scandal. The fact that the sanctus was omitted for years is a rave abuse, and one the faithful needs to be aware of. Perhaps had they been aware someone may have dared correct the choir sooner.

That is true. According to Redemptionis Sacranentum:
[11.] The Mystery of the Eucharist “is too great for anyone to permit himself to treat it according to his own whim, so that its sacredness and its universal ordering would be obscured”.27 On the contrary, anyone who acts thus by giving free rein to his own inclinations, even if he is a Priest, injures the substantial unity of the Roman Rite, which ought to be vigorously preserved,28 and becomes responsible for actions that are in no way consistent with the hunger and thirst for the living God that is experienced by the people today. Nor do such actions serve authentic pastoral care or proper liturgical renewal; instead, they deprive Christ’s faithful of their patrimony and their heritage. For arbitrary actions are not conducive to true renewal,29 but are detrimental to the right of Christ’s faithful to a liturgical celebration that is an expression of the Church’s life in accordance with her tradition and discipline. In the end, they introduce elements of distortion and disharmony into the very celebration of the Eucharist, which is oriented in its own lofty way and by its very nature to signifying and wondrously bringing about the communion of divine life and the unity of the People of God.30 The result is uncertainty in matters of doctrine, perplexity and scandal on the part of the People of God, and, almost as a necessary consequence, vigorous opposition, all of which greatly confuse and sadden many of Christ’s faithful in this age of ours when Christian life is often particularly difficult on account of the inroads of “secularization” as well.31
In short, no one has the authority to change the words of the prayers of the Mass on their own authority. This certainly applies to composers. What the friar did, irrespective of the manner in which he carried it out, was to defend the integrity of the Mass. The greater wrong was the choir’s use of something ilicit.

The faithful have a right to know if an abuse is happening. The priest are called to instruct the faithful after all. I can not fault the friar for that. Now it may have been better to take it to the choir leader personally first, and then address it with the faithful. That might have been better received, however, considering how the leader responded I have serious doubts that he would have received it any better.

One of the greatest virtues that we are called to strive for is the virtue of humility. The Christian response to this would have been to go to the friar and talk to him about this in a sensible manner and then go do your own research on this to see if the friar truly is correct. If you do find that the friar really is correct than you should correct your mistake so that it is in accordance with the Church’s teaching. If the friar is wrong you should bring it up to him in a RESPECTFUL manner and show him the documentation.

What this choir leader did was just flat out disrespectful and unchristian! He needs to be called on it, in a Christ like manner.

agreed. I wish he had not done that even if the priest was not correct.

As what others said, the friar should not have handled it in that way. What he should have done was to talk with the choir director in private regarding his concerns about the music. He could then make the changes with choir director, giving him enough time to prepare the new music. Then, at another mass, let the congregation know that the parish and the choir have changed the setting based on a. b. and c. That way, he won’t be criticizing or embarrassing anyone. All the congregation will know is that the former setting which was used for years was actually wrong to use and that the priests and the choir director have decided together to take action and do the right thing.

The choir director was very petty and wrong with bashing that friar on the radio. I know it’s cliched, but there is a lot of truth to “Two wrongs don’t make a right.”
