I really do not understand this. Can anybody help me understand why Catholics should be doing this? Aren’t we to help those of our own household first? Shouldn’t Catholics help their persecuted brethren first?

At the local level, the priest’s actions seem to make great sense. He showed a willingness to help neighbors approach God in their own religion. It apparently has done much to strengthen Christian-Muslim brotherhood in the area of his church and the new mosque.

At the international level I can not understand it. There are mosques all over Europe, and the United States, yet there are no churches in Saudi Arabia, and precious few in the Arabian Penninsula. And the pope has recently been asking Saudi Arabia, on behalf of all Christians, to allow some churches, however there has been permission granted.

But whatever we think, let us cool down the idea that Islam is a great menace. Read the Catechism if you are Catholic, or if you are not (as I am not) for wise guidance about how Christians should appreciate Islam.

Certainly not commendable behaviour. Pertinacity in error is unseemly, but when encouraged by a representative of the Church to continue in it is foolishness personified. May we pray for this priest, that his misguided charity bless him with the wisdom to withdraw to other, more praiseworthy works.:crossrc:
 
It would seem to have elements of supporting a heresy.

I remember the story of a priest someplace who was good friends with a Protestant minister. When the minister undertook to build a new church the priest apologized that he could not donate to the building of a non-Catholic church. However, he thought it would be proper to contribute to the tearing down of the old one. 😃

It is unthinkable for a Muslim to help build a Christian Church in a Muslim country. That priest must be mad or probably has done it for self agrandizement. Again this is the result of Vatican II as I’ve stated in similar posts.

Well that’s Germany for you. I was raised really close by and we actually had all kinds of projects going on to make coexistence easier for all inhabitants… We even had regular prayers for peace with Catholic Christians, Jews, Muslims and Protestant Christians…
On top of that the city of Cologne has proven over and over again in the past years that they are capable of taking the word tolerance to the extremes… Cologne is one of the few places in Germany that host major gay pride parades with active participation of most political parties. Cologne might be mostly Catholic, but the Cologne attitude goes towards letting everybody be happy in his or her own way… No small wonder that there is a strong cooperation between the different churches and religions in Cologne. A city that can accept something that goes against the proclaimed religious belief of the majority of its inhabitants (who do not seem to care) will not have any problems solving comparably petty issues such as differences in religion. Cologne just loves diversity I guess.
Oh and before I forget… They can do it if they want to. Cologne is having so much income that they are the richest diocese in Germany. The last update I got was that they financially support the Vatican.

Foolish mistakes, first the Pope kisses the quran, and now we have this. When will people learn that muslims can never expect gratitude, cause the first instant this priest even criticizes mohammed, he will be murdered or have his church destroyed or vandalized or burnt?

Well I guess hope dies last. As long as there is a glimpse of hope that Christian charity will not fall on deaf ears there is a reason to be charitable and loving…
That was just the human standpoint however…
Jesus Christ even goes a step further:

In a country where people are already upset about minarets being built see article
this seems to be a less than wise decision.

Christ founded His Church and he told His disciples to spread the Word to all people. By using assets to fund Error and possibly Terror, this priest would seem to be serving himself instead of the Lord.

In the city of Cologne lies the Dome, a Cathedral that survived the horrific bombing of WWII.
Inside this wonderful Cathedral the remains of the wise men are resting. The Wise men, Pagans of Arab and Persian origin who recognized the birth of the Son of God and came to bear gifts and witness. Near this Cathedral, a servant of Christ’s True Church wishes to spit upon the memory of the Wise Men, and wishes to keep the evil of Mahomet, who has stolen the lives of so many Arabs and Persians, alive and keep so many of God’s children in error.

This is so sad.
