Priest crossing himself with the paten in Tridentine

What is the purpose of the Priest taking the Paten and doing the sign of the cross with it? I knew a Priest who attacked the Tridentine and said, “They don’t even know why they do the things that htey do in that liturgy! For example, crossing oneself with the paten., I asked a “Tridentine Priest” why he did that and he didn’t know why”

Good question. I am on my way to bed, but will check some of my books about the Mass tomorrow. If I find out anything, I will post it.

It’s not a fair or valid attack, though. Justabout everything in the liturgy, whether it’s the ordinary or extraordinary form, has an amazing amout of symbolism. Did that Priest remember that the Mass of Paul VI grew (in theory*) out of the Mass of Pope Pius V.

• • I only say “in theory” because whilst I held this, I have heard it questioned not from more radical fans of the extraordinary form, but by solid middle-of-the-road Priests I know.

By the sign of the cross with the paten, the priest expresses symbollically the desire of participating in that peace which Christ bought for us by His Cross and by the sacrifice of His Body, for soon we will place the broken host on the paten. The kissing of the paten is a sign of love and reverence toward this “new seplucher” of the Holy Body of Christ.

This agrees with what I have been reading in my sources. In fact, this missal is one of them.
