Has anyone checked the sacramentary? That’s where it would specify genuflecting (or bowing) after the consecration. I don’t have ready access to one or I would check it myself.
The common practice that is taught shows us that the second paragraph (“If, however…”) is speaking of the genuflections that occur when entering the sanctuary and leaving it. The three genuflections within the Mass itself remain no matter what and no matter where the tabernacle is located. It is implied in the second paragraph that they are genuflecting to the tabernacle in the sanctuary. After the elevations. And personally, I like the genuflection. I hope I am reading it incorrectly. It appears that most on this thread hope I am reading it incorrectly. I just wish someone could give me a source that would cause me to rethink what I’m reading.
But this exercise is pointing out to me the danger in laity trying to be liturgy police.
I know this is your opinion. And, Sure has given us one source from the internet (which may be right) that is from the 1970 Missal. But, the GIRM on the Bishop’s website with a Decree from the Vatican from a latter date is at least ambiguous by all counts and a potential source for confusion.Actually it’s called the Missale Romanum and of course it’s prescribed for the celebrant to genuflect in the RUBRICS of the Missal.
I think that I will bring the problem with the kneeless priest to the PP who is his superior.
Dear Orion, I am not “slapping” the priest at all I have nothing against him at all and I pray for him regularly.I know this is your opinion. And, Sure has given us one source from the internet (which may be right) that is from the 1970 Missal. But, the GIRM on the Bishop’s website with a Decree from the Vatican from a latter date is at least ambiguous by all counts and a potential source for confusion.
Your Priest may have in an attempt to be true to the rubrics be doing what he is doing. I can certainly see how he can reach this conclusion in honesty from reading the GIRM that I’ve sited.
Your tone and the fact you have offered no documentation on why you think he is committing an abuse/sacriledge belies a potential personal problem with the Priest and this is your means to “slap him.” I only say this so you will examine your heart in consult with the Holy Spirit on both your motives and the step you now believe appropriate.
If you are intent on taking this to his superior (which is your right but it should be grounded in charity), I do think you should at least review a Sacramentary before you go forward. Also, I think it should be framed in the form of a question as in:
“I notice that you and most Priests genuflect after the consecration but Father _____ only bows. I am wondering if this is permissable. I didn’t want to ask Father ______ because I don’t want it to be a confrontation.”
If the Priest says it is permissable, you can have a conversation about why you think otherwise. You may or may not be convinced. But if it is permissable, I suspect that the Pastor will respect the decision of Father _____ to do it this way. You need to be prepared for this outcome.
If the Priest says it is not permissable, you can request that he address it. You are not in authority to demand it. You are not entitled to know what he will do. Your only option is that if you observe no change is made to take it up with the Bishop. At that point, it is really out of your hands.
