Help please! I feel as though I should start wearing the brown scapular. However, when I asked the priest to enroll me today, he said he has never done it before and doesn’t know the prayer(s). Does anyone know where I can find the prayer(s)/what he has to do so I can bring a copy to mass tomorrow?

I was also wondering, what exactly do you do every day when you wear it? I’ve read differing info on different web pages. Is it the rosary, certain prayers, or something else?

Thank you!😃

Try this website for the prayer:

transporter.com/Fatherpeffley/Doctrine/BRWN-SCAP.html

The conditions required are:
  1. Wear the Brown Scapular continuously.
  2. Observe chastity according to one’s state in life (married/single).
  3. Recite daily the Little Office of the Blessed Virgin, or (if commuted by one’s Priest - just ask him to do so) say five decades of Our Lady’s Most Holy Rosary.

There’s one if you prefer at fatima.org/essentials/requests/invest.asp , jlr247:
it’s under:
Rite for the Blessing and Investiture of the Scapular of Our Lady of Mount Carmel

I’ve included another just below this brief explanation.

To obtain the fullest possible benefits from the Brown Scapular devotion, one must be validly invested (sometimes called “enrolled”) in the Brown Scapular by a priest who possesses the faculties (usually a Carmelite, Dominican or Franciscan), using a scapular blessed by the same or any other priest. After proper enrollment in the Scapular, a person need not have subsequent scapulars blessed. Once enrolled you are enrolled until death.

This rite of enrollment comes from a booklet written by Rev. Albert Joseph Mary Shamon “Our Lady Teaches About Sacramentals and Blessed Objects” ,(CMJ MARIAN PUBLISHERS , Oaklawn Illinois, printed in 1992). It closely resembles the rite in The Handbook of Prayers published by Sceptre Publishers (the same ones who publish the Roman Missal in English). Unfortunately I can’t locate that book right now and I’m about to go to work in another hour (don’t worry I know it’s Sunday…I work for God).

There are other more lengthy formulas, but this next one is respectable, and your pastor might appreciate a less drawn out rite, especially on Sunday. I’ll include at the end the daily offering prayer for those who wear the brown scapular. The priest doesn’t say that daily offering prayer; we who wear the brown scapular try to say it daily. That’s all you need to start. The other stuff you can pick up as you go…the Blessed Mother is there to help you…besides…hey it’s Pentecost and Mother’s Day!

**Right of Enrollment **as per “Our Lady Teaches About Sacramentals and Blessed Objects”, by Rev. Albert Mary Joseph Shamon:

PRIEST: Show us, O Lord, Thy Mercy.
All: And grant us Thy salvation.
PRIEST: O Lord, hear my prayer.
**All **: And let my cry come unto Thee.
PRIEST : The Lord be with you.
ALL : And with your spirit.
PRIEST : Let us pray.

O Lord Jesus Christ, Savior of mankind, by Thy right hand sactify + these Scapulars (this Scapular) which thy servant(s) will devoutly wear for the love of Thee and of Thy Mother, the Blessed Virgin Mary of Mount Carmel; so that by her intercesssion, they may be protected from the wickedness of the enemy and persevere in Thy grace until death; Who livest and reignest for ever and ever.
  • The priest now sprinkles the Scapular with Holy Water, after which he places the Scapular on each person saying:*
PRIEST : Receive this blessed Scapular and ask the Most Holy Virgin that, by her merits, it may be worn with no stain of sin and may protect you from all harm and bring you into everlasting life.

ALL : Amen.

PRIEST : By the power granted to me, I admit you to a share in all the spiritual works performed: with the merciful help of Jesus Christ, by the Religious of Mount Carmel; in the name of the Father, and of the Son + and of the Holy Spirit.

**ALL **: Amen

PRIEST : May Almighty God, Creator of Heaven and earth, bless + you whom He has been pleased to receive into the Confraternity of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Mount Carmel. We beg her to crush the head of the ancient serpent in the hour of your death, and, in the end, to obtain for you a palm and the crown of your everlasting inheritance.
Through Christ Our Lord. Amen.

The priest now sprinkles those enrolled with holy Water.

MORNING OFFERING PRAYER

O my God, in union with the Immaculate heart of Mary (here kiss your Scapular as a sign of consecration; partial indulgence also), I offer Thee the precious Blood of Jesus from all the altars throughout the world, joining with it the offering of my every thought , word and action of this day. O my Jesus, I desire to gain every indulgence and merit I can and I offer them, together with myself, to Mary Immaculate, that she may best apply them in the interests of Thy most Sacred Heart. Precious Blood of Jesus, save us.

Bear in mind jlr247 that the above prayer and the proceeding prayer are not obligatory - only recommended.

" O Queen, who art the beauty of Carmel and the mediatrix of all graces, pray for us" (prayer from The Raccolta - may be said on the Rosary beads also).

Hope this helps. God bless you and your pastor. Have a holy Pentecost.
