I was at a Wedding recently where the Priest ended the ceremony with an oral “Papal Blessing”
He said that since the Pope wasn’t there that he could do this.

I thought this was highly irregular.

I was told that he could do this because this priest was somehow related, by family, to a former Pope.

Has anyone ever heard of this ?

Can a Priest or Bishop give a Special Benediction in proxy for the Pope ?

thanks for your help

Hello

Good point I am not too sure about that, a blessing yes papal blessing seems strange.

God Bless
Saint Andrew.

My father was born the same year and in the same village as JP2. Chances are that they encountered each other in their youth. Does this mean that my father could perform papal tasks? I doubt it.

Under certain circumstances a bishop can, I don’t know about a regular priest.

How about if you just say and extra prayer for my girls?
There has to be some kind of extra pull you have now since JPII is in heaven. Maybe they were childhood friends!
Hey, in this world, my girls need all the help they can get.:angel1:

There is a special “nuptual blessing” which ought to be offered at the wedding. However, that is not the same that the papal (or “apostolic”) blessing. One can ask the Holy See that the papal blessing be extended for some special event (particularly like a major diocesan gathering) and it will usually be extended pro forma. There are certain circumstances (such as in the last rites of the Church’s ministry to the dying) when a priest is certainly enabled to offer the blessing. However, I’m not personally aware of whether than can happen at a wedding. In any case, if he wasn’t properly authorized to offer the apostolic blessing, then they simply did not receive it - no matter what his attempt.

When my grandparents celebrated their 50th anniversary a few years ago, they received an apostolic blessing from the Holy See. There is a nice certificate on their wall with a picture of John Paul II and something to the effect of “His Holiness lovingly grants an apostolic blessing to (insert names here) on the occasion of their golden jubilee of marriage” or something like that.

Those are very readily available. Anybody can get one easily. There are catalogs with all kinds of certificates available from which one can mail order them. And if one goes to Rome, every store in sight sells them. You just send a form to the Vatican which rubber stamps everything to make the extension of blessing official, then the certificate seller puts the proper wording on the nice paper, frames it, and collects it’s fee for product and services.

I have one too! They’re nice.
