At my parish, after the mass (before the final blessing), the priest makes some announcements, like future masses, dates, etc. Sometimes he also announces that there will be a ‘dance party’ (we are an ethnic community, so it is specific to our ethnic community, our way of fund raising) or cafeteria after mass, or he announces that our ethnic dance group will be performing at the annual multicultural festival this year, … - is all this acceptable?

Recently he started saying there was a butcher who is part of our ethnic community - is this acceptable? There was a ‘crazy lady’ who protested during the announcements, but apparently she hasn’t been taking her pills.

I am just wondering whether this is ok, or whether it is as bad as the money lenders that Jesus threw out of the Synagogue.

can you think of a reason why it would not be acceptable for the priest to make parish announcements after Mass?

why wouldn’t it be acceptable? When would you want him to make announcements?

Indeed and in fact it’s generally the most appropriate place for announcements, it doesn’t disrupt the flow of the Mass. I do believe however it is licit to make the announcements before the final blessing.

Some priests keep it short, but there’s one priest around here who is known for his “Litany of Announcements.” :o

Yes, it is quite proper to put the announcements here. Announcements do need to be made; otherwise, people don’t know what’s going on, and are not able to support their parish community in all of its activities.

Um - okay. I have no idea really what this means. Is he saying, “There is a butcher who is part of our community,” or is he saying, “John Smith, a member of our community, happens to be a butcher;” or is he saying, “John Smith, a member of our community who happens to be a butcher, knows how to make the kind of meat cuts that our community members like to use at Christmas time, so get your orders in now,” or maybe he is saying, “John Smith recently qualified to be a butcher so if you need any butchering done you should use him, since he could use the work,” or … 🤷

A lot depends on the context. I doubt that your parish priest is demanding that you pay this butcher before you are allowed to leave the Church building, so no, it’s not like that. However, it’s possible that it may be inappropriate, especially if this particular butcher is not the only butcher in your community and for some unknown reason he is receiving free advertising while others are not.

On the surface it seems a bit strange; however, on the other hand, if this particular butcher is the only one in your area who provides a particular service that your community likes to have, and if it’s part of your religious tradition to make use of such services, then it kind of makes sense.

Basically the priest said ‘there is a butcher who is among our community’ as a sort of advertisement. People from our community want to buy meat (among other products) from our own ethnicity - for example, Germans would want to buy German sausages, or French people would want to buy French bread - the priest said (probably from request by that butcher), that we have a German butcher, so if anyone wants some German delicacies, go to him.’

That one lady said this is ‘advertising in Church, which is forbidden’. I don’t know what to think of it. It’s not the like the priest is making any money out of it, but then again, he is advertising for someone else.

I hope that makes sense

So you do not trust your own priest, but you DO trust the crazy lady?

I don’t get it.

It is OK for the priest to make announcements during Mass. Making them before the Blessing is the correct moment form them to be made.

The parish I am registered at, the cantor does the announcements before mass starts. At the parish I was raised (and go to occasionally), the priest does the announcements after communion before the final blessing.

That is when people start leaving the mass.
I do not leave, though.
The only strange point was the butcher but…come on…it is not Bill Gates…
I dont know, it is faster this way. Were He to write a poster with the news, peoplw would not have the time to read it…

The announcements are fine where they are. If your parish bulletin has ads in the back (most do it is how the printing is paid for), the butcher should probably be advertising there. If you are particularly concerned about it, speak to your priest and ask why this person is being mentioned specifically.

D. The Concluding Rites
  1. The concluding rites consist of
a. Brief announcements, if they are necessary;
b. The priest’s greeting and blessing, which on certain days and occasions is enriched and expressed in the prayer over the People or another more solemn formula;
c. The dismissal of the people by the deacon or the priest, so that each may go out to do good works, praising and blessing God;
d. The kissing of the altar by the priest and the deacon, followed by a profound bow to the altar by the priest, the deacon, and the other ministers.

Announcements before the final blessing are perfectly fine with me, and what I notice most of the time anyway.

In the ExtraOrdinary Form, the priest reads them after the Gospel is read in the vernacular, and just before the homily/sermon is preached.
