For the past two Sundays we’ve had a visiting priest saying Mass at our parish. He doesn’t wear the chasuble–just the alb and stole. Is this permissible?

according the GIRM, it is not allowed, without serious reason. keep in mind that serious reasons can also be simple reasons. like he’s so large that none fit properly, or he’s so small that he swims in it. looking ridiculous is a serious reason. ask him. if he wasn’t prepared to field questions about it, he would have vested properly for Mass. if the stole wasn’t the proper color, like a purple that looks a lot like blue, or multi-colored, be prepared to not like his answer.

I know a priest who sweats like a pig! That is HIS “reason”.

Mind you, he could buy very light-weight vestments, but…

Mind you, again, when the Pope goes to equatorial lands (like Papua New Guinea) - he still wears full vestments - and he comes from a cold climate, and really ought to have reasons to wear as little as possible!
