a priest has been omitting general confession during Mass . He says the invitation to the Penitential Act… Brethren. let us acknowledge our sins, and so prepare ourselves to celebrate the sacred mysteries…then after period of silence, he omits the general confession…I confess to almighty God…and goes on with the absolution.

is this right that he is doing this? is this optional?

thank you

during the Mass, the order of the Mass, this is usually said/ it is called the Penitential Act

There are three options for the penitential rite, Form I includes the Confitior, which is what I believe you are referring.

Form II

Priest:

Brethren (brothers and sisters), let us acknowledge our sins, and so prepare ourselves to celebrate the sacred mysteries.

Priest:

Have mercy on us, O Lord.

All:

For we have sinned against you.

Priest:

Show us, O Lord, your mercy.

All:

And grant us your salvation.

Priest:

May almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us our sins, and bring us to everlasting life.

All:

Amen.

Priest:

Lord, have mercy. Or: Kyrie, eleison.

All:

Lord, have mercy. Or: Kyrie, eleison.

Priest:

Christ, have mercy. Or: Christe, eleison.

All:

Christ, have mercy. Or: Christe, eleison.

Priest:

Lord, have mercy. Or: Kyrie, eleison.

All:

Lord, have mercy. Or: Kyrie, eleison

Form III:

Form III:
Priest:

Brethren (brothers and sisters), let us acknowledge our sins, and so prepare ourselves to celebrate the sacred mysteries.

Priest:

You were sent to heal the contrite of heart:
Lord, have mercy. Or: Kyrie, eleison.

All:

Lord, have mercy. Or: Kyrie, eleison.

Priest:

You came to call sinners:
Christ, have mercy. Or: Christe, eleison.

All:

Christ, have mercy. Or: Christe, eleison.

Priest:

You are seated at the right hand of the Father to intercede for us:
Lord, have mercy. Or: Kyrie, eleison.

All:

Lord, have mercy. Or: Kyrie, eleison.

Priest:

May almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us our sins, and bring us to everlasting life.

All:

Amen.

I believe you are simply describing the third form, which is perfectly valid. The prayer you are describing is the Confitior, which is only said in Form I.

Thank you for clarifying! its optional according to form of Mass priest chooses

For me, the priests tend to vary when they use it. I assume they choose to include it on special days. (And of courses others will always include the Confietor.)

That’s the penitential rite NOT general confession. A general confession is usually made either on retreat or when one has made a sacrilegious confession (spare us, O Lord!).

“A general confession is absolutely necessary for all adult baptized persons who have never been to confession, and for all those whose confessions have been sacrilegious…There is no other means than this for those who willfully concealed a mortal sin, or through carelessness omitted a mortal sin, or confessed their sins through routine without supernatural sorrow, or without the firm purpose of avoiding sin and the proximate occasions of sin, or did not intend to restore, as far as possible, the property or good name of their neighbor, or refused to be reconciled with their enemies, etc.”

Your welcome. I am.rather heartened that you saw something wrong with the Confitior not being said, it probably indicates where you go to mass Form I is used. I much prefer that and it is unfortunate there are parishes that never say the Confitior.
