And not "in the Name of the Father, Son, and Holy spirit…!!!

Is this valid absolution???

I’m not Roman Catholic, but from my understanding of their system you should be fine. If he said he absolved you, shouldn’t that count?

Saint Paisios of Mt. Athos once said “The devil is the greatest legalist” - he wants you to scruple.

Thank you ReaderT…and you’re right, I am being legalistic, which I fall into at times…I believe in Gods mercy, and that He loves me, and even if the sacrament was not in proper form, it doesn’t mean I’m not forgiven by God…but its a comfort to me to know the Sacrament was “completed” in a sense, if you know what I mean…I read 2 contradictory statements on another site…one saying “I absolve you” is all that’s required, another saying “In the name of, etc” is required! Anyway, thanks for your response! “Scruple-icity” is, indeed, of the dark side! (does that word exist lol…)

There have been times when I noticed the priest was saying the absolution to himself while I was saying my act of contrition and said the “I absolve you” part in a more audible voice once I was done.

Maybe that is what happened here? I’d give the priest the benefit of the doubt.

It’s been quite a while since I’ve made a “good” confession and it’s not my fault! I grieve for the Church and I feel bad for clergy. Most priests in my diocese dont speak English as a first language and as far a a sacrament goes, confession is a hodgepodge of half followed formulas and personal preferences of both the penitent and confessor.
That being said, I never doubt my absolution. When the priest doesnt understand or listen or tells me not to say an act of contrition or talks for ten minutes about a subject unrelated to my confession, I know what God has done and i know my heart and my conscience. Why would anyone who really understood the theology ever think differently?

Thanks Idacatholic. I’ve been very blessed with my confession experiences (in the 6 plus years I’ve been a Catholic) Compassionate, very helpful Priests…its such a healing Sacrament…

I try and hold a balance between understanding/wanting proper form, and not going overboard and being scrupulous. But I trust God!
