Priest Ordination ...what to expect/wear

Hello! My husband and I were invited to an ordination for 2 priests in our Diocese. My husband can’t go, but I am going to go…alone:blush:😉

This is just one of those things your probably don’t get the chance to see very often and I hear it is quite a moving experieince. I was wondering if someone could run down what the ceremony is like…is it a mass, etc. and anything I should know other than dressing conservatively?

well I would say dress that is appropriate for church who knows what that means any more, but your suggestion is better. It is one thing every CAtholic should see at least once, the other one we don’t often get the chance for is the chrism Mass. best possible education on the theology of the priesthood. get there early so you can sit where you can see and here (there will be a lot of reserved seating for families, priests, Kof C etc.
 
I have had the honor of actually reading at an ordination of man to his deaconate and to the priesthood. It is an extremely moving sacrament as the bishop lays hands on him. I think the most moving part of the whole liturgy is when they lay prostrate on the cathedral floor while they litany saints is being sung. Brought tears to my eyes. It took about 2 hours for the whole liturgy ( depends on the number of priests that are being ordained) The next best thing, receiving the Eucharist from him at that mass and then at his 1st mass of Thanksgiving. My son and his now wife received one of his first blessings as they had just gotten engaged . I can’t help but think that blessing will help them out if they ever need it.
My family has been blessed having our friend being a priest. He is like family to us.🙂

Hi Kim,

It is a long liturgy, but very beautiful so the time will go by fast. Wear your best church clothing, well made but not designed to call attention. Personally, I would think about flat or low shoes due to the length of the liturgy and how much people will be changing position. But that’s just me; I rarely wear heels and find them uncomforable after just an hour or so.

I just attended a diaconate ordination for 16 new permanent deacons :eek: and this Saturday, the Diocese of Colorado Springs gets 4 new priests!!!

Anyways, what I wore to the diaconate ordination were dress pants, shoes, shirt and tie. I’m wearing the same thing this Saturday. I’d wear my sport coat, but an already hot summer and a church filled with 1,500 people = too hot a day for a jacket. For the reception afterwards I’ll change into jeans, but for the Mass, just keep it simple and nice. I wouldn’t wear something like what you would wear to a wedding. I’m wearing what I’m wearing because I don’t feel like fainting halfway through a 2 hour Mass. Hope this helps!
 
I wore a skirt suit to the ordinations last week. It was about 2.5 hours for two priests, but most of the time was spent with getting all the priests up into the sanctuary to concelebrate.

Just the regular prayers of the Mass. There really isn’t any specific prayers during the rite of ordination for the assembly. At one point the assembly is asked to give their assent by clapping. Also you wil be asked to respond to the Litany of the Saints, which is basically “pray for us.” Be sure to get a first blessing at the reception following (if they have one). They probably will have a worship aide with the entire mass spelled out.

That’s assuming they use the traditional one. The one I went to was some folk-song type of litany, and the response kept changing to responses I’d never heard before.:confused:

Even in the traditional chant the responses change toward the end. You are probably thinking of the Becker litany which adds “all you holy men and women pray for us” at the end of groups of saints. And “Lord hear us, Christ Jesus hear our prayer,” at the end of the litany.
 
WOW! It was amazing! I am SSSOOOO glad I went. I felt so full of the holy Spirit I can’t even imagine what the new priests felt like 🙂
