For many priests, this was the most controversial change in the Mass. It would not surprise me if he was doing it intentionally, but I would give him the benefit of the doubt, unless it continues.
I have heard from several people who know considerably more Latin than I that “for the many,” or “for the multitude” would have been a better translation of the Latin rite, but, for what it’s worth, in the Episcopal Church, the older Consecration rite also translated the word as “for many”.
In any event, while illicit, it does not invalidate the Mass.
