Someone I know claims that the cover-up of the sex abuse scandal went all the way to the Vatican. Is there any evidence that Pope John Paul II or Pope Benedict, then Cardinal Ratzinger knew about it and advised a cover-up?

Absolutely not.
I always find it interesting that the people who hurl allegations at the Church usually have no proof.
Ask your friend to provide you with the evidence of his/her claims.
The burden of proof is ALWAYS on the accuser.

So very difficult to say! Did this “someone” have some kind of personal revealation? Maybe he could share with us his references, we could check them out to see if they are valid? Maybe a documented copy of an official Vatican memo, you know one from Ratzinger to JPII, “Hey John, just wanted to touch base with you on that sex abuse scandal”… anything? Something to work with here please! Or is it perhaps a baseless assumption?

The funniest thing happened Tom. I asked for sources and haven’t heard back from this person.It couldn’t possibly be baseless because he announced it in public with such conviction.I promise I will keep trying and get back to you. with the proof.
