Hi,
My parish priest is sharing his flat with a lady, who is working as a Spritual Director in the parish.

Just from what you’ve stated initially, it seems like an appearance of scandal, which even if nothing immoral is occurring as is most likely, it is still our obligation to avoid.

I’d like to see what other posters think…😉

I think this is horrific although I’m not sure it belongs in the Tradtiional Catholicism forum.

There is the element of scandal here but be careful of slander as well. You don’t need to make this TOO public. Just my opinion.

I think that my grandmother would observe that he is a priest forever, but she has ceased to be a lady.

It isn’t right for a priest to be sharing a flat with a woman, even if they aren’t doing anything sinful. It simply diminishes respect for priests in general when they should be role models of what Christians are supposed to be.

We shouldn’t assume anything improper is going on, although it is true that even the appearance of sin should be avoided, as mentioned above. Commenting on any possible but unknown sin would be wrong though, and detraction at the very least.

[1] where did they “live” before this present arrangement?

[2] does your parish have a rectory?

[3] is this lady also present at his Masses, like up front and center?

[4] how available is he for the sacraments

[5] what is the “quality” of the Mass… does he take liberties with the words, postures, use of laity etc

[6] is her spirtitual direction active, and does it show any results

[7] are they related

Now, regardless of what the answers are… he is in sin… It is a sin to willingly place yourself in the temptation of sin… even if he is a eunich.

I am not in agreement with the priest, however I heard a story that Fulton Sheen housed a prostitute to save her from the destructive lifestyle she was living. I dont know that they were in the same building or not. Im sure that is not what was going on with the priest in your case either; just some food for thought!

Well, I am going back a few decades and in my small town parish the elderly priest shared the rectory with his housekeeper. I never thought anything about it since I was a young teenager and this was the early 60s. I often had breakfast with them both after daily Mass and she was my sponsor when I was baptized.

But gosh…in this day and age…it sure looks bad even if there was nothing going on…

Hi,
This priest came 3 months back from other parish along with this lady. He announced in the mass that Bishop has appointed this lady as a Spritual Director to this parish. I heard both were in the same parish before. In my parish there was no Spritual Director before and a new position is created for this lady and the parishners are forced to pay salary for this lady.

As I recall, the old rectories had a separate apartment for the housekeeper.

This reminds me of this rumor about a priest in my area who was living with a woman. A Protestant friend told me this so I thought that she was either making it up or being anti-Catholic. It turned out to be true, there was a priest living with a woman… who was his mother! I know that this is not exactly the same situation, but it does cause scandal. I don’t think that it is appropriate, I wonder what the reason is for this living arrangement.

If this is true, then the priest should have his collar removed and no longer be a priest. Are not preists suppose to teach and set proper example for us?

That is weird that she has followed him to your parish.

And she is getting paid!

Her services shouldn’t be exclusive to your parish, but made available to the whole diocese if they are so good.

The priest sounds like he doesn’t have much faith in himself to direct people spiritually if he has to have this lady tag along.

As for the living arrangements, it is sad to say that it is wrong, as it seems to assume something sinful is happening. But yes it is wrong. As well as the scandal, she also seems to be getting a free ride through life, with employment and lodging, without the burden of vows and chastity associated with being a nun.

Weird.

My old, very orthodox, Irish pastor shared the rectory with an assistant and a woman. The pastor’s spinster sister was the housekeeper. It really irritated both of them when they were referred to as Father and Mrs. by members of the parish.

That doesn’t seem right. Years ago, priests often had a live-in housekeeper. That isn’t done so much anymore, but it still can be. Ask him about it.

Would it be ok if he shared his flat with a man?

Would you thereby assume that they must therfore be practicing homosexuals?
