Priest should memorize Missal?

Really. I wonder if he has the Bible memorized. Or maybe he doesn’t have enough zeal.

Many don’t like to mention this in practical matters, but I believe it is the fallen angels that put these ideas into a persons head. It is a temptation, and one should try their best to respond to such a comment with as much charity and understanding as possible. And most importantly, pray for that person.

For example, if the altar happens to be against the wall, and the priest is facing the liturgical East, as often happens here in Rome, the priest is supposed to turn around to say Pray brethren… and Behold the Lamb of God…. It is awkward to do this while reading the Missal (which at these moments must be placed on the altar) at the same time.

Some priests learning the EF use a smaller missal or a card when reciting the Orate Fratres, Prayers at the Foot of the Altar, Indulgentiam, etc. The large cards on the altar save him the trouble of looking those prayers up in the Missal.

Sometimes we just have to realize that we’re not responsible for responding to other people’s silliness.

Exactly. I think “Sister once hit me in the 5th grade” is actually a better reason - relatively speaking - if one wants to leave the Faith, than the fact that the priest hasn’t memorized the Missal.

Tell him to let you know when he finds a community where the pastor has memorized the entire Bible. He won’t find one, so why set such an unreasonably high standard for priests when neither your friend nor any potential Non-Catholic preachers can do any better?
