(Do not expect to read much of this in the mainstream Catholic media regarding this story)

(Auto Translation)

Drama Tuesday 15 September, shortly after 7 in Piazza San Rocco in Como. Don Roberto Malgesini, a priest who has always been committed to helping the least, was stabbed to death under the house where he lived.

The attacker, a foreign citizen, would have already constituted himself to the carabinieri. Also found the possible murder weapon, a bloody knife.

Don Roberto was 51 years old, he would have been killed with a stab in the back. Originally from the province of Sondrio, the priest was shot on the road leading to the church. Some passers-by who noticed the body on the ground called for help, but there was nothing for the priest to do.

On the basis of initial information, it seems that the stabber is a foreign citizen with no fixed abode and psychic problems - the circumstance of the man’s previous psychological problems, announced in a note from the Diocese of Como, has not been confirmed by the checks of the forces. of the order.

The man would now be at the carabinieri barracks. The investigations of the Como Police Headquarters are coordinated by the deputy prosecutor Massimo Astori. Still no hypothesis about the motive.

Vain attempts to help the priest. The bishop of Como, Oscar Cantoni, also arrived in Piazza San Rocco shortly after 8.

This evening, at 8.30 pm, in the Duomo in Como, the Bishop will guide the Holy Rosary. “In the face of the tragedy - reads the note released by the Diocese - the Church of Como is clinging in prayer for its priest Don Roberto and for those who killed him”.

May he Rest In Peace, and justice served.

It is being reported, by the way,

I saw it trending on Twitter

Corriere della Sera
La Stampa
La Repubblica

The killer apparently was psychotic.

Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord,
and let perpetual light shine upon him.
May his soul and all the souls of the faithful departed,
through the mercy of God
Rest In Peace
Amen.

IDK what you consider “Mainstream Catholic Media”
I consider “Mainstream Catholic Media” to be the Catholic media organisations who failed to report on the activities of Theodore McCarrick and gang over numerous years.

McCarrick has nothing to do with a priest being stabbed to death. It’s bizarre that you’d even bring that up when it’s nowhere near on topic.

The reality is that unfortunately priests are murdered on a regular basis. Such killings are usually reported primarily in their own country/ regions unless there is some extraordinary circumstance.

May Father Malgesini be resting in the peace of God’s loving arms.

Blessed Mother, please intercede for us.
Hold the sorrowful-
Mother and love the weary, abused, neglected,
broken or forgotten among us-
Give your aid to all needing help or healing-
Assist those who are sick, in pain or suffering-
Be with those needing peace-
Console the lonely or brokenhearted-
Comfort the lost, hopeless or fearful-
Guard the unborn-
Pray for those who are dying or who have died-
Touch those who do not yet see truth or have hardened hearts-
Help us be brave enough to let our hurt and anger go-
Show us the way to do the right thing-
Protect those who are in danger, and
Guide us from every evil.
May all who keep your sacred commemoration
experience the might of your assistance.
Amen

Bizarre? lol You mused about my definition of “Mainstream Catholic Media” so I charitably provided it 😀

May God grant his servant rest.

Hail Mary, full of grace. Blessed are you among women and blessed is the fruit of your womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, mother of God, pray for us sinners now and at the hour of death.

Most places it is not partisan political fodder. Such tragedy should not be presented as such here on a Catholic website, in my opinion. It is just wrong.

The article is a little confusing. In one paragraph it says the priest was shot.

Churchmilitant.com have today released a very detailed account of what happened. The account includes details of how the priest died and official police refutations of certain claims made in this thread in other posts above this one.

Oh, that is so sad. The priest was distributing breakfast.

Praying for the repose of his soul. He definitely did not deserve to die in such a violent way.

Praying for the safety of our priests around the world.

I agree the priest did not deserve to die. Unfortunately, when you work with the homeless, violence is a risk you take. He likely accepted that.
He may not have died as a martyr for the faith, but he was certainly a martyr to charity and I’m sure the Lord looked very favorably upon that.

Edited to add, the political slant of the Church Militant article is very inappropriate (as is usually the case for that sensational and exploitative news outlet) and I’m sure that the deceased priest would not approve of his death being politicized in such a way, especially since he had apparently been friendly with his killer in the past and it doesn’t sound like this murder was motivated by anti-Catholic sentiment.

I am not sure how friendly he was with the suspect. He might have seen him on the street and been familiar with him that way.

Yes, there are risks priests take working with the people on the street or even while saying Mass at the
altar, but it still saddens me to see a priest die in such a violent manner of multiple stab wounds and by someone who does not seem to feel remorse for what he did. At least he walked to the police station and turned himself in dripping with the blood of the priest he had just murdered.

The articles suggest he knew the man and had spoken with him multiple times trying to help him with his immigration issue, specifically the man was worried about being deported.

The man reportedly began to suspect the priest of trying to get him deported (which sounds like the product of a mental disturbance to me, given that the priest had been trying to help him NOT get deported) and attacked the priest.
