Do we have to call priests Father or can we call them by their name only?
Technically, I believe that a priest should be addressed as “Father______”, first name or last name, depending on the priest’s preference.Do we have to call priests Father or can we call them by their name only?
That’s up to you and your priest that you are referring to.Do we have to call priests Father or can we call them by their name only?
The thing is I adore the Catholic faith but through some quite negative experiences I have had with some priests I feel uncomfortable calling them Father. That’s up to you and your priest that you are referring to.
Anyone who called their own human father “daddy” or “dad” is still using a derivative of “Father”.The thing is I adore the Catholic faith but through some quite negative experiences I have had with some priests I feel uncomfortable calling them Father.
My discomfort is supported by what Jesus said about not calling those on earth Father and I feel at some point priests decided to take the honor of the titleof ‘Father’ which unfortunately some dont deserve.
Do you know when the Father title emerged for priests?
I don’t, sorry. I do know that “Papa” (“Pope”) was used as a title for bishops.Do you know when the Father title emerged for priests?
The proper address “Father”.Do we have to call priests Father or can we call them by their name only?
yes if you are Catholic you address a priest properly. Do you like it when people call you blue or River rather than Mr. or Ms. River? You call him Fr. River until he invites you to call him Fr. Blue (his first name). It is a matter of etiquette as much as of theology. If you want the theology there is an answer on AAA.Do we have to call priests Father or can we call them by their name only?
so what do you call your dad?The thing is I adore the Catholic faith but through some quite negative experiences I have had with some priests I feel uncomfortable calling them Father.

I had heard that the ICRSS was supposed to be reassessed and recognized as a congregation of Canons, but I hadn’t heard that it had been done yet. Has it, or is the form of address just “jumping the gun” a bit?It also could depend on the community to which they belong. For example, the proper form to greet a priest of ICRSS would be to address him as Canon, together with the last name or just Canon.![]()
I’ve heard that the “modern” French for a priest is “Monsieur le prêtre” and even “monsieur l’évêque” for a bishop. I haven’t heard either with my own ears, but the very idea makes me shudder. In more traditional circles, though, I believe they still hold to “monsieur l’abbé” (or “père [name]” depending), and “Monseigneur [name]” for bishops. However the french sector has a variation in the way they address priests here. A priest belonging to a religious order (Franciscans, Servites, White Fathers/Missionaries of Africa … etc) is addressed by the direct french equivalent of Father - “Père” ; hence “Père first name”, or “Père last name”, or simply "Père "or “mon Père” (my Father).
The diocesan priests, on the other hand are addressed in french as " l’Abbé (first name or [more commonly]last name )". It is common to address him as simply “Monsieur l’Abbé” also.
