"VATICAN CITY – A 19th-century Belgian priest who ministered to leprosy patients in Hawaii will be declared a saint Oct. 11 at a Vatican ceremony presided over by Pope Benedict XVI.

The Rev. Damien de Veuster’s canonization date was set Saturday during a meeting between Benedict and cardinals at the Apostolic Palace."

Yipeee!!!

Wonderful news. I know many people who have long prayed for his cannonization.

My husband visited Moloka’i and Fr. Damien’s colony. He loved it.

Saw a brilliant movie about St Damien (with great Aussie actor David Wenham playing him to boot) not very long ago - needless to say I’ve become a big “fan”. :crossrc: :getholy:

Few people know that one of the first publicists for St. Damien was the author Robert Louis Stevenson, who first heard of Damien of Molokai during one of his trips to Hawaii and made his work known to the world through several letters and articles he wrote to friends.

For the benifit of those who do not talk Catholic he doesnt “become” a saint. His sainthood is just recognized.

Nice to get some good press for a change. The Honolulu Advertiser ran a story on it fairly prominently.
