The last couple days I was reading a few webpages on the 2,579 Catholic priests at Dachau.
Much of the information was extremely depressing as one would expect, but a bright spot was the story of a German Jesuit and former master of novices named Fr. Otto Pies.
He was released from the camp, but disguised himself as an SS man to smuggle a truckload of food back to the starving prisoners in the camp and smuggle out 30 priests.
Two days later when 5400 prisoners including 88 priests were led into the Alps to be lost/ left to die in the snow, he came back with the truck and picked up more.

I went looking to see if there were more books or stories out there about Otto Pies. I found he had written a book called “The Victory of Father Karl” which was about a young seminarian arrested and taken to Dachau before he could be ordained. The priests in the camp managed to secretly ordain him. Fr. Karl survived the camp but died of TB shortly after his release. I may read Pies’ book.
If anyone is aware of any other books or articles about Fr. Otto Pies S.J., please post. I love these kinds of stories, like Blessed Miguel Pro and “God’s Smuggler”.
