i know this has been covered ad nauseum but could someone give me a link that will list the church’s reasons for maintaing that priests should not be allowed to marry and what led the church to create this “rule”. unfortunately, i’m not a good arguer so i need some assistance.

He was asking about married priests, not women priests.

Actually he is asking why priests can’t marry.

That and married priests are two totally different questions.

Married men may be ordained to the priesthood. It is against the discipline of the Latin Church and requires a dispensation from Rome, other Catholic Churches routinely ordain married men to the priesthood as it is the norm rather than the exception.

I know perfectly well what he was asking. I’m not sure you do, though. The OP can correct me if I’m wrong, but he’s interested in the general issue of why the Roman Catholic Church doesn’t allow (with a tiny number of exceptions) people to be both married and priests. You know, what people generally mean when they say, “How come your priests can’t get married?” I don’t think he cares about the narrow, academic question of why in the Eastern rites a married man may become a priest, but a priest cannot marry.

The Church does ordain married men to the priesthood, even the Latin Church has married priests.

What the Church does not allow is once a man is ordained he is not allowed to get married.

Just a comment - it’s wonderful that priests are unmarried and very wise! A couple of reasons, although the list could go on, an unmarried priest’s mind and heart are not constantly split between serving God and dealing with all the problems of being married and family life (guess which would suffer - unseen God and parishioners not constantly in front of you or the constantly seen wife and kids? Doh! that’s a no brainer!), another point is that any woman can talk to her priest and there is no gossiping church members or a potentially jealous wife around to make things difficult for the priest or the woman needing spiritual guidance. In other words, it offers freedom to the priest to serve God with all his heart, mind, soul and body with no interference and provides freedom for all parishioners to receive spiritual help with no anxiety! Sounds good to me!
