Why are we hung up on this issue?
Celibacy flies in the face of the current free sex culture. Why are we hung up on this issue?
I think this is the case with chastity across the board. There is a lot of social pressure to be sexually active, whether one is a teen, married, single or vowed person. We just apply higher expectations to our priests. The problem isn’t celibacy, the problem is that priests that are supposed to be celibate sometimes aren’t.
Nor is it a solution to priest shortage.Exactly. I just feel a lot of people have been bringing this topic up lately as a solution to sex abuse issues, which it is not.
I do laugh every time I read this.Nor is it a solution to priest shortage.
Especially since the vast majority of sex abuse in the world comes from men who are married or already in a relationship. There’s some kind of magical thinking there, because if these men aren’t attracted to female women, who are of age, then why in the world would ending clerical celibacy change that? Hint: It won’t.
One does not need to be a priest to teach in a catholic school.Without it, there would be at least one more priest in a catholic school classroom in the US.
Nothing suggested that it is.One does not need to be a priest to teach in a catholic school.
I was called to both.If God did not call you to celibacy, then He
Do you not think that God knew about the changes and how that would impact you? God calls people to do things for many reasons, not always to complete a mission as we understand it. He called Jonah to preach to Nineveh, but the results were not at all what he expected. He was disappointed, but God had another plan for the Ninevites. Clearly He had another plan for your life as well, as He does not make mistakes, and you were born and called at a time that was not conducive.I was called to both.
Had the changes come ten or fifteen years earlier, I could have met both calls.
All this being true, it is still a fact that the majority of offenders are heterosexual married men.I don’t know that you can make and sustain such a statement. Perhaps you have never heard of NAMBLA, or been aware of a not exactly recent problem among runaway teenage boys, who all too often turn to prostitution to be able to stay alive. They are referred to as “chickens”, and their predators as “chicken hawks”.
