Seriously, our just drives an older Taurus. Priests here live very humbly.

I have no idea what our current pastor drives. Our old priest drove some old beater (hackback I think). My parish growing up, bought a Jeep for the priest, for one of his anniversaries.

What in the world does this question have to do with anything? I’d say it’s none of your business. 🤷

Our priest drives a Buick year is probably 2006 or 2008.

I would love to see a priest drive a Toyota MR2

Many are like that but not always. We had a priest in the seminary who drove a new Nissan sports car. I think he bought it when he was ordained. He might have had some help from his parents also. I think age plays a part in it to. He might not do that at 57 but at 27 that look great.

This is really interesting because it brings up a distant memory about priests and cars. Way back when I was a kid, about 1977, I saw one of the priests had a beige Audi. I had no idea what an Audi was, other than it was an “exotic” foreign car. I wondered how it was possible that a priest would be able to afford such a luxury. 🙂

When I was much younger, I went to an Episcopal church where the priest was celibate. No wife or kids to support and the parish supplied the vicarage. With considerable disposable income, he drove a Datsun (Nissan now) Z 28. I hear he has a Caddy now.

Moral of the story: they’re more advantages to celibacy than the obvious! 😃

To be fair to the priests some of them inter the priesthood later in life and have built up a good savings. Some cars are given to other priests and some are frugal and just save up for a nice car.

In a way it is like the military room and board are paid for so you can spend more on a car if you want.

My priest drives some kind of sedan, it looks about 8 - 10 years old.

I don’t know about that if a priest drives up in a car worth 50k to 60k it is not a sin but I think I would like to check up on the Church’s budget. Even if he used his own money to buy the car it might be a sign he is not very frugal with the Church’s money.

My priest drives a small car. Either a Toyota or a Honda. I think he chose a fuel efficient car because he does a lot of driving.

I don’t know. But I had a dream of a priest driving a car a while back. I was behind him in my truck.

It was a funny dream.

Ok, maybe it doesn’t belong in the social justice forum but it was introduced as just a fun topic. No need to get upset about it.

As for the OP, our priest has a small SUV (I think it’s a Honda). A small sedan wouldn’t work out here - the parish is pretty rural and lots of the roads are kind of rough. It’s probably the most practical choice he could make.

At my last parish, the pastor (and only priest in residence) drove a Toyota Corolla. It didn’t look brand new, but it wasn’t ancient, either. Maybe three or four years old.

At my current parish, I don’t think either of the two priests in residence have a car.

When I was a kid, the rectory at our parish was pretty much full up. There must have been five priests there. One of them (probably long gone now, God bless him) had a new Cadillac every other year. He came from a wealthy family, and they bought him a new car every couple of years. He was nice about it – he let the other priests use it when they needed a car. Also, he’d give the boys at the school a couple of bucks to wash it, which I liked.

I seem to remember that the convent attached to the parish had one car for all the nuns. A big station wagon of some kind.

Most of the priests I know personally are Jesuits, who take a vow of poverty. If their work requires a car, the Society will make sure they have one, or have access to one. But otherwise they don’t own cars (or much of anything, really). My late great-uncle was a Jesuit, assigned to Nigeria for most of his adult life. When home in the US on a visit, he’d show us pictures of where he lived and worked. He had the use of a motorbike for a while, and then a jeep.

Whatever level of frugality your particular clergy member may or may not have, just be thankful David E. Taylor isn’t your pastor!

Here is a brief excerpt from a deposition where he talks about his church owning a BMW, Mercedes, Bentley, and a Range Rover. He also saw no problem in spending $50,000 of donation money to turn the Mercedes into a limousine!

Hard to say how a priest got an expensive car. It could be many honest ways that have nothing to do with taking advantage of anyone.

For instance, some of the high school boys in the more affluent neighborhoods drive luxury cars. My own grandson got a Lexus from his mother as a graduation gift. Some kids have nicer cars than the teachers.

Maybe priests also inherit cars, or perhaps they have generous parents.
