How do you feel when you see a Catholic priest wearing his collar in public places such as airports, grocery stores etc? I think it is great and hope more do the same. šŸ™‚

It makes me proud to be Catholic! Why should a Catholic Priest hide his vocation? No reason to hide that he is a Priest.

Actually it is sort of a missionary work.

I asked a Priest once why he didnā€™t wear his collar in public, he told me that he was wearing his collar and went to get a prescription filled, the pharmastist only wanted to bill him for half of the cost, but would not help out a more needy customer with his prescription. Since that incident he no longer wore the collar.

What a lame excuse for not wearing a Roman collar! What would he do in Latin America where a priest gets on a bus and when he wants to pay the driver says, ā€œĀ”No Padre, gracias!ā€ What would he do if he walks into a restaurant and after a meal the waiter says, ā€œNo Padre, donā€™t worry, itā€™s on the house?ā€

I once heard a priest tell of wearing his collar. He and four other priests met frequently for breakfast in casual clothes. One day, returning from a sick call, he wore his collar. their waitress expressed surprise to find that he was a priest.

She had been trying to get the courage to go to confession for several years. With the opportunity to talk to him she returned to the Church.

He has worn his collar ever since.

And they should always wear it!

I think Ive heard it said that the collar represents putting on Christ.

I am all for the collar:thumbsup: :yup:
Some priests look at their vocation as a job and not a calling. In fact last night I saw a priest walk into the church in a suit and tie while we were at a charismatic Spirit seminar and it made me think of a sales person more then a person on a mission for God. This same priest doesnā€™t think that week day masses are important also. šŸ˜¦

I think its great, but how do you know theyā€™re Catholic Priests?

I have seen a short, fat, shorted haired women dressed in black wearing the Roman collar walking across the Boston Common (she also had a plastic leg brace and a crutch). What was I to make of that? All the female ministers walking to the Episcopal Church throuth the Boston Common wear the broad white collar and purple shirt. But this fat lady was dressed like a Jesuit. So what gives?

I believe wearing the clerical collar is very important for a priest, it shows people that have said yes to God. I hope to one day wear the clerics.

Fr. Dave, the pastor at my parish doesnā€™t wear the clerics though, he says one should be able to tell he is a priest by the indullable mark on his soul.

Fr. Larry, a priest I meet with, said one time at a restaurant he used the stall in the restroom, and while in their two people came in and started swearing up a storm, Fr. Larry walks out and he is wearing his clerics!

Those people were sure suprise!

I saw this at a funeral home once, I felt it was disturbing.

Also one time when I had a job (at Taco Bell) a person came in with clerics, and I asked him if he was a Catholic priest, he said that he was an Anglican priest.

I find somthing very encouranging about seeing a religious in their proper attire. It makes me proud, and it makes me feel like they are really a servant of god. I had a pastor once who would always wear clerics but a cardigan on top of it. but the indellible mark on his soul was almoist visible. there is NOTHING else anyone would ever assume he was but a priest. see him for the first time across a street, you would think, ā€œoh there is Fr. Fitzimons.ā€ that is in contrast to the previous pastor who wore tyedye and no shoes. he was kinda wierd. (and is currently indicted i beliveā€¦)

My current pastor wears his clerics all the time (well, in summer he wears a light white cotton shirt and does the ā€œroman foldā€ on teh collar). and if he is on church property he will almost always be wearing his cassock. mind you, our church is 2 rented spaces in a strip mall, one across the parking lot from the other. Fr. Mitchell really stands out. If i had any money, i would buy him a biretta, because as much as he wears the cassock, heā€™d like it.

at the bigger parish in my town both of the 2 priests are always wearing their clerics. in fact the pastor actually has his coats and jackets altered to reveal his collar (this is the richer parish BTW), Also the pastor will often wear a cassock with the sash (like cardinals do) but he of course wears a black sash.

I am currently descirning a vocation. and if i am trully called, i would be more than glad to wear clerics almost all the time (especially because i am a simple dresser)

We once had a priest who only wore the collar while in church. Every place else (including parish functions), he wore a FLASHY business suit & tie ā€“ I had trouble relating to him as a priest.

A few of years ago my family and I were traveling to the North East to visit family on Christmas day. It was an early flight out of the Orlando airport. In case you are wondering, we sing in a contemporary choir that usually does the Christmas eve Childrenā€™s Mass. Anyway, we were sitting in the terminal waiting to board the plane when who comes walking in to our seating area but the Bishop himself. Being Catholics from the area we knew right away that he was a Bishop but anyone else looking at him would have only concluded that he was a priest. He was wearing his collar. Nothing else distinguished him from other priests. He was by himself, traveling to Massachusettes to spend the holiday with his brother. We chatted with him for a few minutes and then boarded the plane. It was one of the only times I did not feel a little worried about flying. I figured if we are going to go down who better to be with but our own Bishop.šŸ™‚

Oh yeah, he knew we were wondering the same thing about him (why he was not at Mass on Christmas morning) he promptly told us about celebrating the mid-night Mass at the Cathedral in Orlando.šŸ˜‰

I guess I mention this story because it was the way he was dressed that impressed me the most. He did not flaunt the fact that he was someone of whom would be held in high esteem. The fact that he was alone also struck me. I just always see the Bishop with people around him aiding him in someway. He was very approachable and seemed quite pleased that we stopped to wish him a Merry Christmas.šŸ™‚

btwā€“This good Bishop is suffering from cancer. Please pray for him (Bishop Norbert Dorsey). Thank you.

I think itā€™s an awesome witness and it disappoints me when they donā€™t. Same with nuns.

Never seen a nun wearing anything else than monk frock. Then again, how would I know she were a nunā€¦

I think the only photos of Cardinal Dulles in Cardinal attire Iā€™ve seen have been those from his installation.

The current pope wore plain clerics during his university work when he was an auxilliary bishop.

I love seeing priests in public. It makes me more proud to be a Catholic, especially when the priest recognizes me from the church and says hello.
