A protestant(Lutheran) married a catholic, so when they went to a priest, he told them to attend marriage and counselling, however the protestant fellow rejected the idea, simply because he says “how can a person who has never been married offer me marriage advice?”
how do i defend my catholic faith here?

Jesus was never married. Does the Lutheran reject him also?

A psychiatrist doesn’t have to b a schizophrenic to diagnose one. A lawyer doesn’t have to be a felon to represent one. A priest can advise a married couple because he is able to see the situation from a vantage point of not having a vested interest in either party being more “right” than the other party and because he has at least as many–if not more–years of education than the aforementioned psychiatrist or attorney. Additionally, the crux of what a priest usually discusses with a couple in such a counselling session are issues relating to a Catholic couples responsibilities to themselves, each other, the marriage, the church and to God. It’s a good idea for both parties to have a complete and concrete idea of what being a catholic married couple entails–as even in the best of situations, sometimes couples are on completely different pages about specific issues in life! God bless!👍

I think we can add Paul to that list of “never married” too…and he certainly gave marital advice in his letters.

Starrsmother nailed it too - and just to add to that - sometimes a person who has not been married, but who has talked with a LOT of couples and seen good marriages and bad ones…successful ones and failed ones…can offer the very best advice.

Peace
James

If I needed brain surgery I wouldn’t want a doctor who already had brain surgery, but rather one who knew about it!
At the same time, as long as the couple get’s help, it doesn’t matter so much if the help is in the form of a priest or a married counselor/couple.
I’ve never been to a marriage encounter weekend, but I think they are similar to engagement encounters… neat because several couples talk about situations they worked through.

A priest is very aware of bitterness, resentment, and unforgiveness, along with all those sins that do harm to relationships. He spends time in a confessional, he knows what hurt sin brings into our lives. He’s like a doctor that understands what cancer is, and knows how to remove it.

By the way, priests grew up in a family. They have mothers, dads, brothers, sisters. It’s not like they grew up in a cabbage patch apart from family life. lol

Lots of great answers along the same lines I was going to say: a doctor doesn’t have to BE a diabetic to know how to treat a diabetic.

The problems that afflict us as human beings are universal, and those are the same issues that affect marriages, because marriage is made up of two human beings.
