When did the church officially make the rule that priests could not marry? I agree with this ruling, but I’m just trying to learn when this happened. I’m assuming it had to be within the first few centuries of Christianity. Is this correct?

Thanks!

Jessica

Hi, Jessica!
Code:
I think the first "official" rule by the Church was begun sometime between 295 A.D. and 302 A.D. at the Spanish Council of Elvira.

You can read the whole article at the following link:
newadvent.org/cathen/03481a.htm

The history part of it is almost halfway down the page. My info above came from the “Second Period” part.

God bless! 🙂
