Priests and Nuns not "hot"!

This was so shocking to come from an evangelical who otherwise (and rightly) says that God cares for what is internal less than external:

He said:
Actually I think all roman catholics priests and nuns are ugly…this is totally why they’re celibate… I’ve never seen a hot priest nor a hot nun…
I responded as follows:
*do you consider yourself a Christian? How then can you say such things. For behold, the Scriptures testify against your insulting heart. Behold, the Lord said in the OT that “he does not judge according to appearance but by the heart.” That is in the Scriptures when David was called. Admittedly, David was physically handsome, and yet, that was not what made David pleasing to God. What was pleasing to God about David was that he loved God in the depths of his soul. So then also, Isiah prophesied that the Messiah would not be extraordinary in the world’s eyes, hence, “there was nothing in him that would make us [something to the effect of esteem] him”. Hence, I have faith that Our Dear Savior was not a hunk, as the work would have, but rather only substandard in His face, in order that God might hide Himself under a further cloak of humility. And it is for this reason that I believe that The Virgin was not a pretty girl, but that St. Joseph chose her not because she was “hot” as you call it (and, for that matter, do you judge by the inside of a person or their outside? Are you attracted to supermodels simply because they are physically attractive? But then, if you cannot bring yourself to fall in love with someone that is not “hot”, does that not mean that you do not judge like God [based on the heart], but as the world judges [by appearance only]? ), but because of her virtue. For behold, it is highly probable that most men in Nazareth had no interest in Mary since she was not attractive. But Joseph was a pure man, who sought out a Virgin for her spiritual virginity, and for that reason, he was drawn to the purest creature that ever lived, or will live. Hence, prior to Her Glorious Assumption, the Virgin was perhaps not attractive physically, but now, She reigns over all heaven and earth as the Queen of Queens, the Woman of Women, the Purest of the Pure, the Holiest of the Holy (of creatures).

Indeed, not all priests and nuns are attractive according to the way the world judges. But even if this be, God will not care so much how attractive you are physically when you die as to the condition of your soul at death, that is, how beautiful you are spiritually. For the creature that has not sanctifying grace, has not such beauty. So, then, if God had given a revelation to humanity of the true beauty of persons prior to the death of Mother Teresa, I surmise that many a “hot” celebrity or supermodel would have briefly been seen as hideous and grotesque, and the hunched over holy old woman would not even be recognized, she would shine with beauty indescribable, for many of the women who are lusted after in this world’s eyes are depraved in their inner being, ugly beyond description, but the humble and the sincere, those who love and offer in sacrifice, seeking the Lord as their strength, these have great beauty, but many times it is veiled beneath an exterior that is wanting for men or women who can only see the surface, and not delve into what truly matters.

I pray for you that you come to see the pricelessness of all human creatures, Lala.*

I beg to differ - I think those who have accepted a calling to serve God totally become more attractive in my eyes - in the the sense that the love they have for serving the Lord radiates throughout them! In turn, it makes me reflect on my own dedication to Christ.👍

“Ugly”? That’s about a cheap shot… Have they looked at some of the TV evangelists?

Why would anyone be so shallow as to make such a statement to begin with.

I’m not at all concerned about how someone looks when the Word of God actually says,

Isaias 52:7 How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him that bringeth good tidings, and that preacheth peace: of him that sheweth forth good, that preacheth salvation, that saith to Sion: Thy God shall reign!

Romans 10:15 And how shall they preach unless they be sent, as it is written: How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, of them that bring glad tidings of good things!

Nahum 1:15 Behold upon the mountains the feet of him that bringeth good tidings, and that preacheth peace: O Juda, keep thy festivals, and pay thy vows: for Belial shall no more pass through thee again, he is utterly cut off.

I wonder why you would waste your time dignifying such a ridiculous statement with an answer.

Of course, I am no candidate for Sainthood, unfortunately.

I applaud and appreciate you wanting to share the Truth with someone like that. Your patience and love is definitely a model.

Saying that priests and nuns choose the life because they are too ugly to get a date is a real cheap shot. Such inherently disingenuous words are so obviously false that it clearly betrays nothing less than mean-spirited bias.

Spauline, before we get ourselves worked into a tizzy, can you provide a link?

Clearly you were dealing with an “evangelical” who has no sense of higher things.

I have been told that some of the new nuns are very pretty. A priest (I won’t say his name) admit that when young nun was coming towards receiving communion, he noticed a very attractive nun. She was probably around 20 yrs old. He um, had some undesirable thoughts. The thought was human instinct and regretted for having those thoughts.

I also recall my mom told me that a new priest, who is a former Soldier was hearing confession. He was pretty young, and that there were women line up at his confession booth.

I’ve seen some seminarians and young nuns recently who I’d say were attractive and good-looking, even extremely good-looking. I wouldn’t denigrate them or anyone with the word ‘hot’.

what a stupid discussion
the only choices for describing personal appearance and attractiveness are
ugly vs hot.
why not upgrage our vocabulary here.
A priest or nun who is vowed to celibacy has no business looking “hot”. Neither does a married person, except in the presence of their spouse, and neither does an unmarried person unless they are marketing their physical graces. Hot as a description of personal appearance should be removed from the lexicon.

I agree entirely. Mary Beth Bonacci talks about “pizza love.” When a girl says, “I love pizza, and I love my boyfriend,” are these the same types of love? I mean, you eat pizza, and when it is left over you put it in the fridge until later. do you have a relationship with pizza? Do you want pizza AS a good, or FOR its own good?

Therefore, a woman or man should never be called “hot, luscious, or delicious.” We consume food, but human beings are creatures that we are called to give love to and receive love from.

BTW, I agree with a lot of the top posts. I have seen nuns that are truly beautiful, that I am attracted to, and all the more because they are spiritually beautiful. I think of one particular young nun in the Czech republic. She was very beautiful and intelligent. Had she been available, and had I the vocation of marriage, I would have considered to court her.

I remember an absolutely beatiful nun from when I was in Catholic school. Not only was she physically attractive, but she radiated a spiritual glow. Interesting for a seven year old to notice. I still remember her name, Sister Mary Magdalene.

We also had some new Priests at our Church a couple of years ago. Wow. No, I didn’t have impure thoughts, just enjoyed seeing God’s works of art. Father Dave Dwyer, from Busted Halo, is really good looking in person and a super nice person as well. I’m saying that with a pure heart, honest.

Me thinks some Evangelical minister needs to try a few Catholic churches before he sticks his foot in his mouth again 😃

"Actually I think all roman catholics priests and nuns are ugly…this is totally why they’re celibate… I’ve never seen a hot priest nor a hot nun… "

Foul… utter filth! I don’t know who told you that you should be able to lust after a priest or nun? It definitely was not God!!!

I wonder if he would use the same line of reasoning for Jesus and Mary…? Of course, evangelicals will do their best to deny the celibacy of Mary at all costs, but it would be interesting to see him explain Jesus’ celibacy at least.

aiyoh!!!

Who say priests, nuns, brothers are ugly looking.??? . maybe the opposite!

most of them … 99% of them are good looking … in fact I got comments from my catholic friends esp the women… they say most priest are good LOOKING!! good enough to be a movie star!! no kidding! One even commented that why God want all the good looking men to join priesthood!..

Amen! St. Faustina is utterly beautiful. As is the Little Flower. They were stunning. Men, kneel before the precious women who were wondrously beautiful BOTH physically and spiritually!

Of course your evangelical friend is making a generalization. There are handsome Priests and handsome Priests that dated or were engaged prior to becoming Priests. There are certainly attractive nuns. As I recall there was a video in the vocations section of a nun in a small order receiving her habit and she certainly was attractive by any standard.

The call to a life of service is not easily nor always understood. That is why Paul notes in Corinthians that the unspiritual cannot discern the things of God.

Ps I know a wonderful nun who is cute as the dickens and just a super spiritual Christian woman. She has given her life to God and to service. Just a powerful witness to the faith.

It’s subjective, great evangelical, stating a personal opinion as a fact. He would get crushed in any kind of philosophical/theological debate
