You know, if you call nuns “hot” they might get angry with you. Then you know what you’d have?

Hot cross nuns. (Sorry, couldn’t resist.)

Seriously though, even if the ridiculous claim that they’re all unattractive were true, what would his point be? It’s not like unattractive people in other walks of life are forced to remain celebate. 🤷

That’s true. I married.

I’m not Catholic, live in a fairly Catholic area (St. Louis) and I see very few nuns or priests and most of them are over 50. I’m left wondering, exactly how many nuns and priests this evangelical has actually seen?

That being said, I saw a priest on TV once who was a Vatican spokesman and he looked like a movie star. Also my mom said the nun who taught her in 4th grade was absolutely beautiful. However, I would assume that most nuns and priests have “hotness” pretty low on their priority list.

I remember once when I went to confession to the new priest at our parish. Almost fell over when there to my amazement sat Mel Gibson.

I have to admit, the former priest at my parish was, emmm,oh all right,he was Down Right Handsome to the hilt.😛 but he was also the most holy man I have ever met.👍

And probably the more so because he was so holy. Right?

If ugliness breeds celibacy where are all these ugly people coming from?

Of course your evangelical friend is making a generalization. There are handsome Priests and handsome Priests that dated or were engaged prior to becoming Priests. There are certainly attractive nuns. As I recall there was a video in the vocations section of a nun in a small order receiving her habit and she certainly was attractive by any standard.

The call to a life of service is not easily nor always understood. That is why Paul notes in Corinthians that the unspiritual cannot discern the things of God.

Ps I know a wonderful nun who is cute as the dickens and just a super spiritual Christian woman. She has given her life to God and to service. Just a powerful witness to the faith.

Excellent post! Yes, generalizations can be inaccurate. Certainly there are physically attractive priests and nuns. And certainly there are priests and nuns who lean more or less to being physically unattractive. Faustina’s pictures do indeed show her face to be attactive, though I personally wouldn’t say the same for the adult pictures I’ve seen of Little Flower: littleflower.org/
Our parish priest when growing up was an obese, cigar smoking, gruff individual: surely most did not find him attactive. Yet we all know we should value the interior more than the exterior. And, recognizing beauty, whether exterior or interior, in proper perspective of what is important, is not intrinsically sinful. After all, we are all created by God, in His image.

Acouple of things:
  1. Isn’t there a Bible verse about Jesus, which says something like, “There was nothing about His countenance that would draw men to Him?”
  2. Teresa of Avila was well-known for her beauty.

Not that I am without fault but I don’t believe that we should even be discussing such a thing, it falls under the column of gossip, obviously the person who said it needs our prayers more than anything else and I think that we should all say an extra prayer that this person will see the error of his ways.
Bless You

YES! I believe it is Isiah, and I attempted to quote this verse in my discourse in the OP.

what a stupid discussion
the only choices for describing personal appearance and attractiveness are
ugly vs hot.
why not upgrage our vocabulary here.
A priest or nun who is vowed to celibacy has no business looking “hot”. Neither does a married person, except in the presence of their spouse, and neither does an unmarried person unless they are marketing their physical graces. Hot as a description of personal appearance should be removed from the lexicon.
I don’t like the terminology use of hot to describe a person who is attractive. I would either use attractive or beautiful.

I think St. Bernadette is very beautiful, and St. Faustina as well. I believe St. Bernadette of Lourdes’ body is incorruptible state.

The terms (picked up in Catholic school environments) Father What-a-Waste, Sister What-a-Waste and Brother What-a-Waste didn’t invent themselves…

(just to be clear, I don’t consider the religious life to be a waste whatsoever, but those who invented and use these terms may, at least at some shallow level)

FYI, the interest in becoming a nun is on the rise in the US. The covents don’t even have rooms for new sisters…

Most priests and seminarians I know have dated and could marry if they wanted. In general, I’ve never seen anyone who was too ugly to find someone to marry them. Just walk around the county fair!😛 Shoot, I’m one ugly dude and even I’ve had my share of women fall for me 😉

Seriously though, pious devoted men are what many, many women look for. Would-be priests fit that description to a “T.” They would have no trouble marrying if they so desired.
