I know what you are talking about,but when the practice stopped don’t know. I assume however the priest was a chaplain to some important lay person,like say The duke of Norfolk, a prince or the king.
These are quite interesting tidbits. If you don’t mind me asking, where did you get this information? I would love to know more about priests during the Middle Ages.
In the Middle Ages a huge chunk of the educated people were religious such as priests, monks, nuns, brothers and sisters as such they were basically essential, furthermore as few if any had legitimate heirs there was less concern about them gaining privileges to pass on.
Probably the culmination of the middle ages ending and the secular reforms that were coming, also probably the wars between the various religious sect that was in Europe.
