I believe the GIRM says the sermon should be delivered from the pulpit, or the priest’s chair, and there is some language allowing them to stand between those locations. This opens the door to the perambulating. I always find the walking around to be a trendy affectation. Just gimme a good homily without the theatrics!!!

When the priest gives the homily from the ambo it always comes across as Authoritative. From the chair or anywhere else, especially in the middle somewhere with whatever type of mic, it comes off like stage act.

IMO anything less than from the ambo ends up being shallow. The Church structure has an ambo there for reason… I wish they’d all just use it!

About half the priests deliver the homily from the pulpit and half deliver the homily from the aisle of the church. With the wireless microphones, they can walk around without being anchored down.

First time I saw this perambulating homilist phenomenon was nearly 20 years ago. And he was a very conservative priest.

And he was so good at his pastoral duties that he eventually became a bishop.

My priest is an eloquent homilist and sometimes gives his homily from the end of the middle aisle.(I’m not sure on terminology here) He is not a theatrical man, but is a very gifted speaker. He also doesn’t deviate from GIRM at all, so it’s probably ok.

I think some leeway should be given in this because for some people public speaking is difficult. If pacing helps them give a better homily, I think they should not be over scrutinized for it. I, myself, am terrified of public speaking so I always sympathise with any speaker.

The GIRM states this:136. The priest, standing at the chair or at the ambo itself or, when appropriate, in another suitable place, gives the homily.

So here again, in my opinion, there is (too) much latitude provided in the choice of wording used. “Another suitable place” could be from the choir loft if the priests decides this to be “suitable” .
But the key words are "STANDING AT" He must be "STANDING AT". No other options are given, so no “wandering” is allowed.

This one is pretty black and white.

It’s the comprehension of the written English language that is lacking.

The GIRM is very clear - it TELLS WHAT MUST BE DONE! “These are your instructions!” If there are any ‘options’ to that instruction, they are listed. If not, **JUST DO WHAT YOU"RE TOLD!!! AND STOP ALLTHIS PROTESTANTISM!! **
(“I can do whatever I want, Nah, nah nah, nah, nah”)

(Sorry, I’m not hollering at you personally **🙂 **)!!

Blessings,
Angel

A priest giving the sermon somewhere other than the ambo?

We are not amused.

Regardless of whether saying the homily twenty feet in front of the pulpit (in my large church) is right or wrong, I prefer it when the priest comes closer to the congregation and walks 6 or 8 pews down the isle. Sometimes, my priests will carry their notes with them, but I feel much closer to them when they come closer to me while they are giving their own unscripted (not from the missal) message.

I normal don’t care for deviations, but this is one I like.

One of our Priests always comes down near the first pews for his homilies. I like it. He is very intent on communicating his point and I think coming closer to us really grabs your attention. I really like our Priest.

I never thought of it as theatrical. I think he puts a lot of effort into his homilies. It’s just his style.

The only drawback is that I can’t see him sometimes since he is down lower than the pulpit.
