That is very sad to hear, regarding your own personal issues, and too, your response to the ‘joke’.
Thank you for putting the word “joke” in quotes, lest we make the mistake of assuming you approve of this rogue priest’s sense of humor.

You’re the kind of person who loves a good funeral, aren’t you?

toilet humor really isn’t appropriate in church, but i wouldn’t snitch on the priest for it.

i think his friends told him afterwards if he didn’t figure it ou himself

In the case of taking this one thread as it stands, then, it is just about one thread. If one is putting it in line with other things happening, then yes, a wider picture becomes apparent. However, false statistics can be drawn from doing this, and as such, it is better to simply take each thread as it comes. There are times in which the same posters keep bringing up the same questions or keep repeating the same kind of responses in threads, which are questionable and can easily be perceived as a growing concern.

.
Sorry I’m cutting your post so short; you made a lot of good points, and i’m not disregarding them.

I think for me, it’s becoming a bit more difficult to take a single thread on it’s own. That may be completely unfair, but after some of the recent threads regarding clergy and individual parishes, I am drawing a conclusion that there are far too many people who focus on completely irrelevant issues and they completely miss the point of why we attend Liturgy. And they miss the point of what (I think) this subforum is supposed to be about: to learn about the substance of Litrugy and Sacraments; not clergy/parish bash. One poster (who was recently banned) did this a lot. There was also a complaint about a pastor wearing brown shoes… So, I think a little fatigue has set in.

I kind of want to shout at folks “it’s not Burger King, you can’t have it your way”! 🙂

In my opinion not the best place and time, but I may steal that line at some point in the future. Particularly if I get a snooty boss.

I am in agreement with this. I would like to read posts about the history of or deeper meaning of the Liturgy and Sacraments, not multiple threads involving a complaint about some relatively minor thing that the priest, musicians, lay ministers and/or parishioners are doing. I have only been reading this forum for a few weeks and so far have seen probably 15 to 20 of these threads, and I don’t read every thread on the forum, so there are probably 10 more threads that I didn’t notice. Some of the threads start out with someone asking a legit question and get sidetracked into minor complaints, others start out with a minor complaint and a seeming agenda by the OP to get others to agree with their complaint.

I think going forward when I see one of these threads I will just post a short prayer on it that everyone on the thread including myself develops patience, and move on. But I do wish they were segregated in one complaint subforum or done away with altogether.

I am not in outrage and turmoil, not freaking out, not reporting anyone to the bishop. I’m not bashing the priest. I just wanted to know if anyone agreed with me, although goodness knows why. All I want is a reverent and holy Mass, and that seems to be getting harder and harder to find. Obviously this was the wrong place to come.

The more you come to CAF, the more you’ll realize that this is almost always the wrong place to come for anything more than pure entertainment value.

As to wanting a reverent and holy Mass, I believe you (like a lot of other posters here) may be defining “reverent and holy” WAY too narrowly. Do you honestly believe that because the priest made a silly joke, his confection of the host was invalid?

if you believe the confection of the host was valid, and the bread and wine became the Body and Blood, who are you to say the Mass wasn’t holy? If the Blessed Sacrament is present, the Mass is holy. Period. Reverence is an inward thing. You decide whether YOU are reverent. Reverence is not something you can (or get to) impose on someone else, certainly not the celebrant of the Mass.

This will not be a popular response, but here goes. I often attend mass with a friends who are not Christian, trying to do my bit to evangelize. Every time I bring someone with me I cringe a bit as I enter the church for fear of what we might see or hear.

We Catholics can be a little casual about the way we dress and show respect at mass. The priests are likely to crack jokes and sometimes on the verge of inappropriate. (“holy ****” was the last gem from the ambo I heard)

I am hard pressed to explain and justify this stuff, as non-catholics are surprised by this lack of decorum during a service which we attend to participate in a sacrifice to our God.

Just sayin.

This probably would not fly in most of the Protestant churches that I’ve attended so I can see why a Catholic would think this inappropriate.

Both you and I remember happier times when forum rules forbade practices like using the Liturgy and Sacraments sub-forum as a sort of complaint window.

(((HUGS)))) and I agree and blessings and thanks for this thread. Yes, reverent and holy are ceding to basic and human … and that is wrong. Wondering how many of the congregation were suffering pain quietly etc?

You are right. Just behave respectfully yourself when there and others who you are with and see how how you behave will hopefully remember that.

How anyone can say that this bit is okay: “…that I’m less full of it.” during Mass, is shocking. We know what “it” means, in this sentence. And during Mass?!

There will always will be those around at times who seem to wish to demean every sacred element of the faith including some on here but it doesn’t mean to say that everyone thinks the same way.

You have been given ways to respond amongst a reasonable amount of posters who have concurred with your view; as far as others go, you can take with a pinch of salt, yet it is surely still good to hear both sides of a debate so that you can know what you are up against and hopefully this will inspire prayer and dedication in your faith. The beauty of being a Church is that there are others who can take up the mantle while many others are struggling and this brings about the likelihood that all can come back to the narrow way.

Here is the gist of Father’s opening remarks at Mass on Sunday: Well everyone, I’m back - I had a colonoscopy on Friday. A lot of people may say that I’m less full of it than usual."

I thought this was very inappropriate and it definitely didn’t help me to get in the proper frame of mind for Mass. Thoughts, anyone?
I think it’s a funny and harmless joke, nevertheless, probably better to save for after Mass. I don’t consider a small and harmless joke like that at the start of Mass that big of a deal to be honest.

Now if he were not reverent during the Mass that would be upsetting I think.

I hope this has helped

Ouch. When you posted, did you post trying to help the OP, or just for pure entertainment value? and if that’s how you view every other poster, why should the OP view you any differently?

I hope this has helped

Sigh. Glad I can no longer get to Mass if this is what goes on. I would not expect a “joke” like that in any polite conversation anywhere. What we used to call “toilet humour” and were raised never ever to speak anywhere

In church? As an intro to Holy Mass?

Some small harmless joke like that at the start of Mass I am certainly not going to make a fuss over, I am more concerned about the reverence when conducting the Mass, especially toward the Holy Eucharist.

first world problems.

but think for a minute

we only have the ‘gist’ of it. context is everythiing.

it could have been a dad joke

it could have been absolutely deliberate.
