Sorry for the long rant, but I know your frustration. My former parish went through a sudden and unexpected change change from Dominican priests to Diocesan priests last year. I don’t know if nasty letters were necessarily sent, but there were a lot of angry people who changed parishes but still find it necessary to vent their anger at the new priests and the Archbishop. I was frustrated to a certain extent, but I would have kept going to the parish. (My family was miserable so I cooperated with them in changing parishes.) I would never consider saying hurtful things to a priest, whether in writing or in person. In fact, I would never even say anything nasty about a priest. Even with priests I don’t particularly like, I might complain, but I would never spread rumors or resort to name-calling even with family friends. Our friends who used to go to that parish would probably not say anything nasty to the priests, but at get-togethers they will say some very disrespectful things. I think even when talking about someone, one should respect them, especially when talking about priests. I am not confrontational at all in person, so for months I’ve been having to hear nasty rumors and name calling at every get together. (The Bishop is an a**, the two new priests secretly hate each other and are cowards, etc.) When we were talking about the press conference that had the old Archbishop introducing the new one, I pointed out that the old Archbishop kept trying to make the press conference about him, and not the new one. It’s not like I called him a name or anything.
