Just a heads up for fans of “The Princess Bride”. There will be special screenings at selected theaters nationwide on October 15 and 18.

I’m planning to go Sunday (my birthday!)

For more information and to find a theater near you, go to:

I never ‘got’ the immense appeal of this movie. It hovers uncomfortably between parody and straight-up fairy tale. Can someone explain to me the appeal and why it’s still such a big favorite of so many?

Oh gosh. My former pastor LOVED this film and always said goodbye by saying “Have fun storming the Castle!” which I guess is from it??? ?
Never seen it myself.

Yes, Billy Crystal spoke that line.

It is full of stuff like Prince Humperdink sniffing a small vial and declaring it to have previously contained iocane powder. This is hilarious because iocane powder is clearly stated to be odorless earlier in the movie. Plus the swordfighting scene is great. The impressive clergyman is quite impressive, the ancient boo-er is suitably warty and crabby, there is an albino monk like person, a giant, a princess, pirates, everything one might desire.

Well, you’ve sold me on it! A warty boo-er???

Let’s do this!

Just as a clarification: the October 15 & 18 dates are for the United States.

According to a poster I saw on FirstShowing, there will be screenings in the UK on the following Monday, October 23.

@Pug, so is the idea then that it’s a story being told by an unreliable narrator? (i.e. Peter Falk).

There is some unreliable narrator stuff in it. But it’s really a genre-defying romp. Only yesterday my husband was able to say I wasn’t dead, I was only mostly dead. He then fed me a chocolate covered pill and I have recovered well enough now to challenge Prince Humperdinck from the comfort of my own bed…

I think the key for me is the narrator is a very loving narrator. My uncle would tell “hero” bedtime stories featuring my cousin and I, all details lovingly crafted for maximum effect. Perhaps it reminds me of him.

I always figured that the prince sniffed it, didn’t smell anything and thus concluded that it was iocane because it was odorless.

You really should take time to watch it.
It’s great.
