OK, so the whole thing with the opposition to the federal government giving money to people creating or using embryonic stems cells from humans. I see and hear the opposition everywhere.

so why isnt there just as big a push to make it illegal for private companies to do just that? why havent i seen any bills in Congress that would make it illegal for anyone at all to create human embryos for the purpose of harvesting stem cells?

my opinion: Bush isnt really concerned with the MORALITY of federal funds given, its more about the private sector and big pharmaceutical companies having the market on stem cell creation cornered. its about MONEY.

allowing universities which are largely nonprofit to compete with the private industries would cause billions of dollars in revenue to be lost for them.

even though cloning is banned in many states, US professors are traveling regularly overseas to help foreign scientists clone embryos and extract stem cells. how come there isnt a huge push to make that illegal the same way they made it illegal to travel overseas to have sex with minor children? basically, people are leaving the US to circumvent laws established here. they are then able to reap the rewards from an otherwise illegal act here.

i havent seen one single bill that would make it illegal to even carry out invitro fertilization. if there are people so strongly opposed to any of this, then why is there no legislation to make such things illegal?

or does it come down to: catholics beleive it is wrong, but they really cant dictate what so many other people do not consider to be wrong?

is it like contraception? the catholic church teaches against it, but there is no real push to make it illegal. people who accept the doctrine dont use it, while other people do. i mean, you can tell a person it is wrong, but you cant stop them from using it.

Yes to all of the above…

IMO, it’s a matter of choosing battles that can be won. And refusing combat on battles that cannot.

When we can’t win legislation that outlaws a procedure where a full term baby is delivered feet first up to the head, then his head is crushed and pulled out. A procedure that all believable doctors admit has no cases of medical necessity (actually less risky to just deliver a healthy baby). When we can’t even win that one, how are we going to do what you suggest? Hmm?

On the other hand we CAN point out that it is an outrage that our tax money is taken from us in order to fund what we consider to be murder. A LOT more people are sympathetic to this reasoning for some reason, so we’ll take it. Thus it’s worth fighting for.

The pro-life movement IS working towards all that you mention. From encouraging people to name and bury miscarried babies, to lobbying for less adoption red tape, to opposing day-after pills, we are trying to inculturate America to understand that it does NOT make sense to treat the unborn as precious when wanted and surplus flesh when not wanted. He is what he is, regardless of the circumstances. Winning that battle WILL take time. Perhaps a lot of it. In the meantime, we do what we can.
