I think *Dirty Dancing *and Vera Drake have pro-abortion being legal messages.
I don’t know about Vera Drake. I’ve never heard of that one. In Dirty Dancing the girl almost dies after a botched abortion. I don’t see much glorification in that.

Dirty Dancing’s subplot of a botched (illegal) abortion implies that had abortion been legal, it wouldn’t have been botched.

Vera Drake was a small film of a couple years ago, but its lead actress, Imelda Staunton, was a heavy favorite to win Best Actress (until Hilary Swank stole it from her at the last minute, for -]The Reaping/-] I mean -]Freedom Writers /-]I mean -]P.S. I Love You/-] I mean Million Dollar Baby.

If These Walls Could Talk - I didn’t watch the whole thing because I was in highschool at the time, about 15 years ago. Once I realized what it was about I demanded my “friends” turn it off or else I would go home instead of spending the night. Isn’t it about a handful of women, throughout time, who live in the same house, all have abortions performed inside the house?

Coach Carter: A disgusting pro-abortion film where a girl aborts her child and thus has a “happy ending”,

Vera Drake: A movie glorifying an abortion-performer.

“Coach Carter” and “Vera Drake” are both disgusting pro-murder films.

Cider house rules is a “pro-choice” propaganda film really. I remember when it won an oscar for screenplay (I think) the recipient made a “pro-choice” statement about never going back when abortion was illegal.
If memory serves me, he also thanked NARAL and Planned Parenthood in his acceptance speech of the Oscar.

My brother and sister-in-law went to see the movie in the theater and had no idea what it was about. They were quite disappointed. From what my brother said, the basic moral of the movie is that morality in regards to abortion is like the orphanage’s “cider house rules”: it’s all arbitrary and once you’re “mature” the “rules” don’t really apply.

How about all the movies by the psuedo intelectual crowd, commenting on political issues, ie redford, sean penn, and especially george clooney. just watching these droll idiotic egomaniacle atrocities may make any pregnant woman think of a “mercy killing”

there was an episode of a show called “Everwood” (which now is off the air, THANK GOD (it promoted premarital sexual relationships) that dealt with abortion. Unfortunately, the good doctor Andy Brown decided to do the abortion (I didn’t watch the episode, I just know this). Its horrible when they promote abortion as the ONLY option.
I saw some of this. Or maybe this is from another story on the show. The “Good” doctor pays off his son’s girlfriend to go have an abortion without telling his son a thing. This is when I stopped watching.

Someone above mentioned Maude. Going to the soaps on All my Children in 1973 Star Erica Kane made this couragious choice for self glorification over life. I think that there IS a change in attitude now. Last year her aborted fetus came to town an evil doctor transplanted the fetus into his wife instead of killing it.

I saw part of a movie years ago about a woman running for president. She was refusing to discuss a past abortion because she felt it was wrong to talk about it, because it was “her private decision”.
There was a similar movie entitled “The Contender” several years ago that starred Joan Allen as a nominated Vice Presidential candidate. She was a proud atheist and fiercely pro-choice. Jeff Bridges starred as a goofy and eccentric President. It was a terrible movie because it hit you over the head with a 2 X 4 with it’s propaganda.

That’s what I took from the movie as well. Weird, I don’t remember the incest thing…it’s been a while since I saw Cider House Rules. I do remember the whole drug thing. Michael Cane’s character seemed to have some moral issues, IMO, that made hime need to bury his pain in drugs. Charlize Theron was AMAZING in the movie. Toby McGuire, eh, I’m not big on him anyway.

This was definitely a pro-abortion movie all the way!!! You have to look a little deeper, and you have to recall the ending to get the full effect. First, it didn’t treat the incest abortion as a bad thing. Instead it’s more like a revelation as to why this distasteful medical procedure is so “necessary”, and in the end he fully steps into the role of the young replacement for Michael Caine’s character. And not once does Toby Maguire’s character see the immorality or lack of responsibility of messing around and almost putting his own friend into a situation where she might want an abortion. So it really tries to reinforce the presumption that irresponsible sex is so necessary that abortion becomes necessary as a consequence. What we really need is pants that are so difficult to remove that the act of taking them off spoils the mood.

Lots of comedies treat abortion with slightly too much respect, like FOOLS RUSH IN. It’s mentioned like it’s a respectable option, but the girl says she’s keeping it and the subject is dropped. Since she acts like she has a Catholic background, hanging a big cross in her house, etc., she should have at least wrinkled her nose and shook her head about abortion before saying she’s keeping it. Instead we know one character is for it and the other doesn’t seem to care either way, she just happens to feel like keeping the baby this time.

think that this is really common now. The woman makes the CHOICE for life. but it is clear that this was a CHOICE and either way would be just dandy.

most movies tend to be against abortion but I notice that several of the medical or law shows I have seen on tv tend to favor abortion, euthanasia and the culture of death etc. when the issue comes up. I am sure many of you can come up with examples to the contrary which is why I say several meaning the episodes I have seen.

I agree that (from my experience at least) the pro-abortion agenda seems to come up on TV more often than in movies. Probably because a TV show can address it in one episode of many and likely not receive too much negative backlash. If a movie takes on the issue, then it places much more prominently.

Quite right:
But you don’t have to look back any further than last year for political statements in acceptance speeches. When he received his award for best screenplay adaptation for ‘‘The Cider House Rules,’’ the novelist John Irving made a point of thanking Planned Parenthood and the National Abortion and Reproductive Rights Action League, offending at least part of his audience.

I’m not sure it it’s for abortion or against it as it is a Hong Kong horror movie. But the horror is quite subtle. The movie is called Dumplings which is a about an aging actress who goes to a woman who makes special dumplings that make you young. The reason the dumplings are so special is that the woman who is actually much older than she looks, is a neighborhood back alley abortionist. Everyone knows this. The special dumplings she makes are made from chopped up aborted babies. The actress knows full well what she’s getting herself into but eats them anyway. A sub plot is that a woman in the neighborhood has a daughter that has been raped by her father and is pregnant. She takes her daughter to the woman to get an abortion (albiet without any pain medication whatsoever as it ruins the nutritious properties of the fetus O_o). Anyway later on in the movie, the actress’ body has been renewed because of eating the fetus dumplings and she finds herself pregnant(she’s been infertile). At the same time, the daughter later bleeds to death as a result of the back alley abortion. It’s time for the woman to skip town as the police are after her. Now that the actress no longer has her fresh supply of babby dumplings, the movie ends with her giving herself an abortion whilst taking a bath, The implication is that she’s going to eat her own baby so she can still be beautiful. It’s a very cerebral horror film so it’s more about implied horror than any actual gore. As this is Hong Kong, I didn’t get why the abortion was performed outside of a medical facility. I assume it was because of the shame of incest or because Hong Kong is not Communist and surgery ain’t free.

Someone else mentioned it too, but Coach Carter is one that I would call pro abortion.
I thought the movie was really dumb to begin with, but that abortion was just the icing on the cake. Here the girl is all happy about being pregnant in the beginning then descides to have an abortion in the end.

I know this thread is pretty old, but I just saw a few parts of a disgusting movie, “The Cider House Rules” - yeah it’s a pro-abortion flick for sure… there goes the last bit of my respect for Toby Macguire and Michael Caine. Also, Dirty Dancing qualifies as a pro-abortion movie in my mind. The Last King of Scotland I think involved abortion as well… Law and Order SVU definitely makes statements in favor of the morning after pill and embryonic stem cell research. All of this is just revolting…

I really liked Coach Carter until the end, when the girl says she had an abortion because “I had to do it for me.”

It was some pseudo-sappy scene where we’re supposed to applaud her -]murder/-] choice. So disgusted, until I realzed who produced the film: MTV.

I then realized I shouldn’ve been so shocked.

Dirty Dancing would probably qualify as a pro-abortion movie. The pregnant girl pretty much decides to get an abortion without any real discussion on adoption, etc. Baby (the girl who falls in love with Patrick Swayze, for those who don’t remember the film) obtains the money from her father without telling him what it is for, and the girl has the abortion. She is seriously injured, but lives and is not shown with any emotional problems afterwards. The whole scenario is never treated with the gravity it warranted, and there was definitely no pro-life vibes in the movie. Dancing also had quite a bit of premarital sex with no implied consequences (except, of course, the one pregnancy and subsequent abortion).

There was also two episodes of House which dealt with abortion, but I don’t remember them well. I do remember that one was about a woman who did not want to kill her child and I don’t remember what she ended up doing (I want to say she kept it). Another was about a woman who had been raped, and unfortunately that one was considerably worse. House tells her not to worry, they’ll just give her an abortion and she was sort of like “okay”. I’ll have to re-watch those two, but the second one in particular was disappointing to say the least.

I thought in Dirty Dancing it was handled fairly well. The reason an abortion was deemed “necessary” was because the woman’s only shot at supporting herself was by being a dancer - something she couldn’t do while pregnant. This explained the lack of adoption discussion, and didn’t seem so flippant towards abortion - you could relate to the woman’s choice. She was portrayed as a nice but sort of confused woman, who kind of exploits herself because she needs to support herself, wasn’t she? You didn’t get the impression she was a huge beacon of morality - she was simply a realistic character. Not all women do have emotional consequences. I get the pro-lfe position, but I also appreciate realistic characters and situations in movies - and abortions are one of them. It wasn’t propaganda-ish, phony, unrealistic, or demeaning - it was realistic IMO. The premarital sex was rather promoted, but it was a romance movie.

I’m obsessed with House. The only two I remember are the rape one - which was a stupid episode with an unrealistic character and I thought the abortion decision was treated stupidly because this woman was all emotional and flipping out about everything but that. But I only saw that one once.

The other one, which people get angry about, is a 12 year old girl who is a swim star and travels around the country with her team and coach without her parents. She comes in sick - they eventually realize it’s the pregnancy that’s doing it. she had to have an abortion to save her life. It’s disturbing because House keeps it a secret from the parents, and I think an older boy on her team his father. But I actually liked how it was handled - the girl is way too mature for her age and getting into things because she has an adult lifestyle and is surrounded by older people. House basically rips into her for her stupidity - and you can see he’s doing it because he’s horrified by her situation and is genuinely worried about her. They portrayed the abortion as a good thing, but something that never should have happened. And House’s comments were good.
