Catholic Democrats are some of the stubbornest and most blind people I have ever met. They are loyal to their party more than they are loyal to their Church.

I looked up the Virginia districts and found that the 11th congressional district includes Fairfax County. The two candidates, interestingly enough, are both Roman Catholics.

Worth noting, though, is the non-profit work that the Republican candidate has done. This is from Wikipedia:

"Fimian is a member of the national board of directors of Legatus, a Roman Catholic group of business executives started by Domino’s Pizza founder and philanthropist Tom Monaghan. Fimian faced attacks from the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, which sent out mailings criticizing the group’s “radical agenda” of opposition to abortion and contraception. Fimian and some Catholic leaders accused Connolly and the DCCC of religious bigotry, with one blog saying the mailings were “inflammatory and extremely anti-Catholic toward a group of business leaders who follow their faith.”

He is an advisory board member of CatholicMil, a Catholic organization supporting members of the military, their families, and military chaplains.

He is president of the Washington, D.C.-based Youth Leadership Foundation, a supplemental academic and character formation program serving disadvantaged youth in the nation’s capital."

I understand that you can’t support him on the negotiable issues, but from what I’ve read, he has a pretty solid background.

Oh that is rich indeed. As if the pro-abortion agenda ISN’T racist!!! When Margaret Sanger’s purpose in founding PP was to wipe out black Americans! They have never distanced themselves from her mission and in fact, they still give an annual Margaret Sanger award every year! Hillary Clinton got one 2 years ago here in Houston! A KNOWN RACIST EUGENICIST and they give an award in her name!

RealJuliane, I certainly hope you weren’t referring to me (the OP) when you said Catholic Democrats are “stubborn” and “blind” and “more loyal to the party than to the Church.” If that were true, I’d be voting for the Democrat regardless of his views on abortion. If you recall, the entire premise of my post was to find someone who is pro-life but OTHERWISE subscribes to the Democratic principles I believe in. Voting for the Democrat on the ballot is something I said from the beginning was not an option.

Wow. Try living in a state where both parties are ardently pro-“choice”. Then tell me what party to join/or vote for.

Blind statements like this are just needlessly provocative.

Many Catholics do just that. Thus, Catholics voted for Barack Obama in about the same numbers as did the rest of America. A man who voted to deny medical care to a baby born alive during an abortion! NO CATHOLIC should have voted for Barack Obama. ZERO!

No, I am addressing the Catholics who do vote for Democrats regardless of their pro-abortion views. I know they are out there because they helped elect the MOST pro-abortion Senator ever to be a candidate for President.

Both parties? Ardently pro-abortion? No. One party has abortion written into its platform. The other doesn’t. Individual candidates might be more pro-life or less pro-life, but when the platform includes LIFE not DEATH, you cannot state that both PARTIES are pro-abortion.

Here you are: 1st, the Republican Party platform statement on the dignity of life:

Maintaining The Sanctity and Dignity of Human Life

Faithful to the first guarantee of the Declaration of Independence, we assert the inherent dignity and sanctity of all human life and affirm that the unborn child has a fundamental individual right to life which cannot be infringed. We support a human life amendment to the Constitution, and we endorse legislation to make clear that the Fourteenth Amendment’s protections apply to unborn children. We oppose using public revenues to promote or perform abortion and will not fund organizations which advocate it. We support the appointment of judges who respect traditional family values and the sanctity and dignity of innocent human life.

We have made progress. The Supreme Court has upheld prohibitions against the barbaric practice of partial-birth abortion. States are now permitted to extend health-care coverage to children before birth. And the Born Alive Infants Protection Act has become law; this law ensures that infants who are born alive during an abortion receive all treatment and care that is provided to all newborn infants and are not neglected and left to die. We must protect girls from exploitation and statutory rape through a parental notification requirement. We all have a moral obligation to assist, not to penalize, women struggling with the challenges of an unplanned pregnancy. At its core, abortion is a fundamental assault on the sanctity of innocent human life. Women deserve better than abortion. Every effort should be made to work with women considering abortion to enable and empower them to choose life. We salute those who provide them alternatives, including pregnancy care centers, and we take pride in the tremendous increase in adoptions that has followed Republican legislative initiatives.

Respect for life requires efforts to include persons with disabilities in education, employment, the justice system, and civic participation. In keeping with that commitment, we oppose the non-consensual withholding of care or treatment from people with disabilities, as well as the elderly and infirm, just as we oppose euthanasia and assisted suicide, which endanger especially those on the margins of society. Because government should set a positive standard in hiring and contracting for the services of persons with disabilities, we need to update the statutory authority for the AbilityOne program, the main avenue by which those productive members of our society can offer high quality services at the best possible

And now, the Democrat party platform. Same issue. Of course, this is placed within the “health care” section and uses coded language, but it’s clear as glass to those who have eyes to see. This is from the 2008 platform, but the same language has been in the platform for decades now.

Reproductive Health Care. We oppose the current Administration’s consistent attempts to undermine **a woman’s ability to make her own life choices and obtain reproductive health care, including birth control. We will end health insurance discrimination against contraception and provide compassionate care to rape victims. We will never put ideology above women’s health. **

Plain enough for you?

OP here. I couldn’t come up with anyone to write in, so I voted for the Republican. Not enthusiastically, though, and my husband (lapsed Catholic and staunch Democrat) is very ticked off at me.

If I’m being completely honest here: I voted for him but I really don’t want the Republicans to be running this country. I support their pro-life agenda but nothing else about them. So secretly, a part of me (really, most of me) is hoping they don’t do as well as predicted tonight. I’m sure those thoughts are probably a sin.

So how about that! I voted for the Republican to avoid going to hell, but now I’m probably going there anyway because I don’t really want him to win.

That is certainly a wonderful statement, but I live in Connecticut, the bluest state second only to our dear neighbor to the north. During last election season, there was an opinion piece interviewing high ranking GOP members, and they talked about how the Republican Party in Connecticut is “different”. Members respect woman’s ‘reproductive choices’ and other ‘social’ issues (ie. gay marriage). They probably also favor embryonic stem-cell “research”, as a way to stimulate the economy (we are the seat of several major pharmaceutical companies that would “benefit” from this research).

So I’m basing my assessment off of what republicans are actually saying and doing. Not a single candidate I researched mentioned being pro-life (possibly out of fear of political “suicide”).

@ OP:

Congressional Districts don’t go by county, and Fairfax County is split into several Districts. Central/Eastern Fairfax County (Arlington/Alexandria) is in the 8th District. North/Western Fairfax (McLean/Manassas) is in the 10th. South/Western Fairfax (FairfaxAnnandale) is in the 11th.

Which are you in?
