Hello,

I was praying the rosary with some others at the local abortion mill the other day when it dawned on me that we really should spend some of our time there singing hymns and simple pro-life songs. Voices carry more when you sing, and people tend to pay more attention when they hear singing. Not to mention that singing is one of the best ways to pray. I’m not saying the rosary isn’t a fantastic prayer, but I think a nice mix would be really, really good. Say you do one rosary, then maybe sing for 15 min, then another rosary and so on. But I’m at a loss when it comes to putting together a list of potential songs to sing. Any recommendations?

The song “Brick”, by the Ben Folds 5. While not an overtly pro-life song, it’s melancholy nature really tells the story of sorrow about his high school girlfriends abortion. It’s a very touching song. A group though, might have an odd time singing it…

Off the top of my head:

Madonna’s “Papa Don’t Preach,” believe it or not. This despite the fact that the RCC condemned it (for some unknown reason). I guess the fact that she has pre-marital sex with her boyfriend in the song may have something to do with it.
If you’re willing to get past that (and many may not), it IS a Pro-life song.

Mariah Carey’s Husband Chris Cannon has a song about his Mother----thanking her for not Aborting him when she had the choice. I forget the name of it.

Believe it or not, “Heart-Shaped Box” by Nirvana is supposedly (among other things) an indirect critique of our parents’s generational preference for Abortion. Dave Gruehl the drummer (now of the Foo Fighters) said that some of the Original Sound effects left on the studio floor were supposed to simulate an Abortion Hitting the Floor (I know,). I don’t quite see the Pro-Life message in the lyrics, but that’s what i’ve read.
And it IS Kurt Cobain. And Nirvana. So play at your own discretion. 🙂

Those are the ones off the top of my head. See about them. My heart and my prayers are with you on your struggles against the Culture Of Death. 👍

The Church (“RCC” as you call her) did not “condemn” this song. I agree it tells a great pro-life story about a woman begging her father not to to make her abort her baby.

And she does not “have pre-marital sex with her boyfriend in the song”. No sexual act at all is mentioned, let alone any explicit language. The past act is merely implied, and she says that she regrets having done it and that she and her boyfriend want to get married and want her father’s blessing for getting married instead of aborting. See mad-eyes.net/disco/tb/papa-dont-preach.htm

May I also suggest, “Livin’ Thing” by Electric Light Orchestra, lyricsfreak.com/e/electric+light+orchestra/livin+thing_20045334.html (btw I think the second last line should be “Don’t let her gfo” not 'So let her go")
and “Where Do the Children Play?” by Cat Stevens. sing365.com/music/lyric.nsf/Where-Do-The-Children-Play-lyrics-Cat-Stevens/6C9F92C82E06BAFF482569BA0009C860

I’m almost 40 and I DO remember Holy Mother Church (at least some local parishes at least) condemning it. They even made a video (still remember it after all these years) with a priest and (apparently) real-life pregnant women dancing around called “Madonna Don’t Preach.” The song was sung to the tune of “Papa Don’t Preach.” BAD production values, but it got its point across. The Priest singing in the video looked REALLY uncomfortable singing and moving around, I remember. 😃

And she DOES have pre-marital sex in the Song. Since she is asking Daddy to allow her to MARRY her boyfriend and to NOT have him force her to have an Abortion—it logically precludes that they had pre-marital sex to end up in that position, REGARDLESS of the Fact that no “Act” is actually referred to in the Song. It’s UNDERSTOOD that she’s had Sex with her Boyfriend. 👍

Well you should be old enough to realise that just because a priest says something, or makes a video, that doesn’t mean that Holy Mother Church agrees with him. Priests have their various different and widely varying personal opinions about all manner of things just like everybody else. None of these constitute the official position of the Catholic Church on the matter.

If I recall correctly, Madonna met Pope John Paul II not long after the song came out. He didn’t take the opportunity then, or at any other time, to condemn it.

No, she does not. Unlike very many other recent popular songs.

Yes that’s what I said.

To the Tune of The Vietnam Song, by Country Joe and the Fish:

Well come on all of you Catholic men, the Church needs your help again,
we got ourselves in a terrible jam, way down yander with a-bor-shans,
put down your books and pick up a nun, we’re gunna have a whole lotta fun.

CHORUS
and its 1,2,3 what are we fightin for?
don’t ask them they don’t give a dam, their next stop is a-bor-shan,
and its 5,6,7 open up the pearly gates. Well there aint no time to wonder why…Oh NO!
they’re all gunna die.

now get on the sidewalk don’t be slow, why man this’s war a-go-go,
there’s plenty good money to be made, supplyin’ the docs with the tools of the trade,
just hope and pray that when they change their ways, or in eternity they will pay.

CHORUS

now come on parishioners lets move fast, your big chance is here at last.
you must get up and get outta your beds and save a baby that would be dead,
you know that peace can only be won, when you meet em all in kingdom come.

CHORUS

now come on mothers throughout the land, say a rosary, do what you can,
come on fathers don’t hesitate, hit a prayer vigil before its too late,
be the first one on your block, to have a clinic closed up and locked

CHORUS

😃

Obviously, I’m not involved in any music ministry. 😉

I am suprised no one mentioned Freshman from The Verve Pipe.

Of course, the context of singing this in front of an abortion clinic may not work as well as you would think.
