You will be able to become Catholic despite any and all sins you commit, never fear. You will be able to go to confession and be absolved of all of your sins.

Why not make a conscious effort to change what you say? Change to Oh my goodness, or oh my gosh.

Oh my goodness, or oh my gosh.
Why is goodness to be taken in vain and what is a “gosh”? (Google translates “gosh” as “Lord”)

Maybe control yourself to feeling in awe every single moment and pray and wait for a real moment of awe.

Mary888, I think that maybe the expression is getting “lost in translation.” I am American, and neither goodness or gosh is thought to have those meanings to anyone I know. Maybe it means what you say and I am clueless, but I don’t think there is anything wrong with it, as far as I know. I have never heard any objection to either of them before.

I have change it and got it down but when hurt or shocked it just comes out I do the rosary and pray

Oh, will you look at that!..

Dear me! …

That’s terrible/awful! …

I’m stunned! …

I can’t believe it …

Oh! Really? That’s …

Find some other ways of expressing sentiments in place of that in the situations you would have in the past used that to express yourself. Sadly I used to as well, but through Confession & Communion God’s grace helped me to overcome it (including the mental misuse when imagining conversations etc) together with thinking before I spoke!

My little granddaughter of 31/2 corrects herself when she comes to visit…'oh my G…goodness!"
Part of her other family constantly say the
wrong way,but she is making a great effort not to 🙂

It should be rather easy to have custody and control of what comes out of your mouth. Just make the effort to break the unwanted habit.

Gosh is essentially a word invented to prevent saying God in an exclamation. It is called a “minced oath” where made up words are used instead of taking the Lord’s name in vain or as a substitute for profane language. It is very common in America.

I don’t think you would need to abstain from communion for something like that.

Using interjections with sacred things is bad because it diminishes their importance from something sacred to something mundane.

Habits are hard to break but they do break and virtues do grow. If you watch a tree growing day after day you won’t notice the difference but if you compare two pictures a year apart you will definitely notice the differences. People are the same way.

It’s a lack of respect for God, the same lack of respect as saying god instead of God

It’s using His name rather casually and not considering what the name stands for. It’s using God’s name because you are mad not because you are worshiping Him. It’s misusing God and this disrespectful. But this is just my opinion, my two cents

I can see this used a bit differently. If a person, for example, sees a horrible event, the term could be seen as a desperate plea for help. (Cut short by time constraint perhaps)
Same with “Oh Jesus!”
Or I might be a nut.
Dominus vobiscum

I’ve heard a few priests say it and it kind of surprised me. I’ve never said it. I will sometimes say Oh my. My grandparents had a couple of unique phrases - one was Darsht-it and Dad-gummit. I just cringe when I hear omg.

Congratulations for choosing Life.

Now, do you have a cat? Have you ever said, “Cat it’s time to eat.”

Do you have a dog? You ever have to go looking for him, walking through the neighborhood screaming, “Dog… where are you? Dog… come home?”

I’m going to assume you haven’t, because you gave your cat/dog a name. & if you were to say cat or dog you weren’t talking about your cat or dog otherwise you would use its name.

His name is not God, it is not Lord. Just like yours isn’t man, or woman, or even child of God.

Understand this is only my opinion. & my opinion is that saying OMG, oh my goodness, oh my gosh… all mean the same thing because we know what you want to say.

Again, it is my opinion that it isn’t a bad thing to say omg, oh my god, oh my goodness, oh my… or shucks. But if you do feel guilty about it, lift your mind up to the Alpha & the Omega, bless the holy name of Jesus & thank Him for the gift that is you.

& go to confession.

You might consider “elevating” these comments — say “oh my God” and “dear Lord” all you want, but have the intention of making these into actual, short prayers, what they used to call “ejaculations”. Say these things when the occasion calls for it, with an eye towards making them affirmations of the majesty and lordship of God. What in the world is wrong with sprinkling short prayers throughout your life?
