Problem saying oh my god

I am not great about this either…I don’t literally mean it but it’s nevertheless sinful and disrespectful to yell out “oh, Jesus” when someone nearly hits my car on the road.

“Oh fudge” and other overly sanitized phrases don’t quite have enough teeth and are too precious. 'Oh, crap!" fits the bill for me though…hahaha.

My neighbor used to say "Holy Buckets’ which I got in the habit of saying because she’s great and I thought it was funny. I use “for Pete’s sake” and “oh, for the love of Pete” also (Pete is nobody in particular).

Some say such reactions should be surpressed entirely…not likely in my case. I am well satisfied to stop sinning, but becoming less expressive is not realistic for everyonr…I’m Irish, for Pete’s sake!

What about when people say omg ? I know that I have written/said it while texting/talking with friends so is that the same thing?

Homeschooldad and I have a similar idea. I also add what the intent is in our heart. My example, lets say you witness an auto accident. I would certainly not stop, kneel, pray, and say a rosary for the hoped-for safety of those involved, THEN go see. It would be something short, and easily done while on the run getting to where the victims are. No sign of the cross before or after either.
Side note. When I see an ambulance “on a roll” I say a quick prayer for the person(s) they are going to help. And for them to get there in time, and safely.
Dominus vobiscum

Of course the intent matters. People used to use interjections with God, or Jesus, or Mary, or a saint, but they actually meant what they were saying.

I think that is fine, it’s not saying God. I’m not always the best at not saying it but I was always taught in religious education growing up that saying OMG was a sin (using Lord’s name in vain)

I was watching a homily not long ago, I forget who by, but they were talking about the subject of taking the Lord’s name in vain. They recommended the best course of action is to recognise it right away and make a correction so - Blessed be the Lord.

It’s interesting though, I don’t know about other people but I seem to have forgotten what reaction was given in shock or frustration when we were children, before we got these sinful “adult traits”

I’m joining the chathlic faith this Easter but when we had young kids instead of swearing said I said omg lot but now it’s a sin I’m trying to stop but now and again it slips out I know it will stop from taking holy communion is this right and could it stop me from joining
The doors are open to all not just a few as some may have us believe.

Jesus never turned anyone away not even Judas.
So do not worry. Jesus taught of repentance.

The first thing a priest will ask during any confession is… When was your last confession…

It’s a lack of respect for God, the same lack of respect as saying god instead of God
Do you honestly believe by wording god instead of God this is a sign of disrespect to the Lord?

I always use G but wouldn’t think g is offensive.

Yeah I do because it equates God to lesser gods. The Hindu gods are not equal to (because they aren’t real) God. Saying god for God equals god to other gods and not the one and only God
