I’m sorry if it came off as a “spelling lesson”, that was not necessarily my intent. I was just trying to show the huge difference between the definitions of those two terms and why the Church condemns occult practices. 😦

I disagree that automatic writing could be anything other than the workings of the occult. It’s quite similar to self hypnosis because it removes a person from being conscious of their surroundings. When that happens, it can leave them open to spiritual influences which they are completely unaware of at the time. That can be very dangerous. It’s not the same kind of situation as someone being in a coma at all. In those cases, they are not voluntarily entering that state in order to learn “secret knowledge”. Automatic writing is specifically engaged in to do that very thing.

If God wants us to know something, He will be the one to initiate the process of our learning those things. We should never try to force His hand by engaging in these kinds of practices. It can even open us up to demonic possession, because the devil will slip in if we give him the opportunity to do so.

I really don’t think Young is doing “automatic writing”, but I am eager to find a Catholic alternative. I lived for a few years with a group of nuns who had a residence for single women interested in developing their faith life, and we used the Liturgy of the Hours. I know what it’s like, and think that maybe that’s what I need. Does anyone here have an opinion on that or another recommendation? I am physically unable to make it to Mass and don’t want only to watch the Mass online. Thanks in advance.

You can pray the Divine Office at home.

Have you called your parish about having the Eucharist brought to you?

No, I have not been to the parish in some years. I could call, I suppose. But I am reluctant.

The heavens, and the parish, rejoice when we we meet a new family member!

No, I have not been to the parish in some years. I could call, I suppose. But I am reluctant.
You should not feel reluctant.

However, if you do, simply ask someone to call for you. God Bless

Automatic writing is rare and not been studied well. No one really seeks to 'practice automatic writing." To condemn a mysterious event akin to a cult is an interesting facet. The only thing I will add here is that “God works in mysterious ways.”

If you want a lovely daily devotional that is true to the faith, I would recommend Prayers for the Journey by Fr. James Fitzpatrick. It is a beautiful book, broken into the liturgical year, with daily prayers.

I just love it. If you’re having trouble finding it, please let me know and I would be happy to send you my copy to help you in this time.
